Easiest Homemade Wine & How To Make It

in #homesteading7 years ago

Made some blackberry wine with the abundance of blackberries we had last year. After doing a little research decided to do it in the simplest way I could find. All you’ll need to make this wine is any type of fruit, sugar water, a adequate jar, coffee filter and time. No need for all the fancy fruit presses, crushers, filters and pads, wine fermenters, blichmann or hydrometers.

MAKING BLACKBERRY WINE

First make sure your jars and lids are clean and sanitized. Fill the jars with the Blackberries a little over half way. Next make the sugar water. Depending on how sweet you like your wine use 4 cups to 6 cups of sugar per gallon of water. We used 5 cups but next time we will use a bit more and use 5.5 cups of sugar. We like a sweet wine! Warm the water up so the sugar will dissolve. When the sugar is all dissolved and the syrup has cooled a little, fill the rest of the jar with the syrup. You don’t want to pore the hot syrup in a room temperature jar. It may break. Make sure to leave 1-2 inches of air at the top of the jar. This will help the lid from buckling and making a mess when the water is turning to wine. Leave your jars at room temperature in the dark for 4-5 months. The longer it sits the better it gets. After patiently waiting 5 months or so, open the jars and strain out the Blackberrie using a colander. The last step is to strain the wine through coffee filters to separate the sediment and clear up the wine. You may need to strain it a few times.

RECAP

  • Clean and sanitized jars and lids
  • Fill jars half way with berries
  • Fill the rest of the jar with syrup, 4-6 cups of sugar per gallon of water
  • Let it sit in dark room for 4-5 months
  • Strain the wine with coffee filters

BENEFITS

Blackberry Wine  helps lower cholesterol while helping boosting your immune system. It is rich in vitamin C,  helps in blood clot & osteoporosis prevention. As well as helps fight heart disease, cancer prevention and free radical protection. There are antioxidants found in red wine that comes from Berries or Grapes. Moderation is key when it come to red wine and its benefits. Try to keep it at 1-2 glasses a night. :)

Surprisingly the wine is pretty good! It will probably won’t win you any type of awards but I bet it will impress your friends and they will be asking for your recipe. Happy wine making!!

This is some simple I can get behind! On bumper crop berry years, there's only so much blackberry jelly I can stand. Great way to use up the extras!

I agree. I'm always looking for new ways to use the extras! Thank you for the comment @powellx5!!😊

Who knew it could be so simple??? I am def trying this when the wild blackberries come on!

Right!! Its a great way to use up those berries that were just going to shrivel up any ways. Thank you for reading @creationofcare!😁

Nice! looks delicious and love the added health benefits ;) You didn't have any issues with the pressure generated during the fermentation?

Thank you! The lids bubbled up a little but didn't have any leaking. That was one of the things I thought about. Made sure to leave enough space at the top of the jar so it had room to expand and do it thing.😁

haha yes! love how easy this is. i'll definitely be making some this summer. my friend has a lot of aronias (aka chokeberries) and i may do a blend. All dem vitamins!

Ooooooh we have so many wild blackberries! Must try!

Prime blackberry season is July and 5 months later is December. This year some people are getting wine for Christmas.😆

very nice. "impressing your friends" is the coolest thing about this hole proces :D I love when thay say:" WHAT? YOU made this?" :D :D :D

you had any problems with opening the jar afterwards? How big was the presure inside?

It took a little force to open them but the pressure wan't to strong.
