Breaking Bread...but first...baking bread

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

I don’t know about you, but bread is one of my favourite comfort foods….especially when it is made with flour that we ground at home, from wheat that a neighbour grew. Today I woke up early to bake bread, a symbolic tradition of sharing and friendship…which is perfect for today as @wwf is coming over to help me on the Hempcrete Haywagon House! You can see the post here…https://steemit.com/homesteading/@harvardhomestead/progress-on-the-hempcrete-haywagon-house-thanks-to-wwf

Today I decided to go on a bread baking extravaganza and bake three loaves. This is enough to last me a week (if it’s just me and the little girls at home). When I have wwoofers, my older children are over, or I have company, I will typically go through 6 loaves a week…sometimes 10.

Lately I’ve been baking a lot of sourdough. After 5 years of trying and trying and trying to get it right…I’ve finally had success! This is a skill I had been trying to foster for so long as the care, nurture and use of sourdough starter means that I have even greater security for my family. It means I don’t need commercial yeast to bake bread…and it tastes amazing.
Today I settled on baking 2 loaves of sourdough…and for a treat, some traditional sandwich bread.

I’m going to share my sourdough recipe first. This is a perfect recipe for newbie sourdough bakers. After all….it worked for me!

And...my ALL TIME favourite whole wheat sandwich bread. This is the old standby bread that I have been baking for almost a decade. It is perfect for using sifted, home ground, whole wheat flour in. I hope you enjoy!

Let me know if you have any questions about the recipes! And...I would love to see yours!

Thank you for sharing the recipe. Did you make your own sourdough starter in the beginning? By the way, your tag mmmmmmm makes me smile. ;-)

You are very welcome. I didn't. This starter has been alive and well for decades. I was fortunate to get some from a friend. Starters will become more robust based on use over time, and actually also by the span of ecosystems it lives in. Many people will share starters and mix them together for that reason. Have a great evening!

Thank you so much for the information!

I am sure @wwf enjoyed the lunch. I just learned how to make sourdough bread as well. I have only been doing it for two weeks. I am enjoying making something that is at least better for the guys.

That's wonderful! It took me so long to learn that I think I value it much more now! I am looking forward to seeing you again soon!

me too. It will be fun.

Excellent... gott show @kelsnm this recipe!

Shes getting into cooking of all sorts!

Well then I send my wishes of many successful loaves in your future!

Thank you!

Likewise, much success!

Yummm sourdough bread. I need to stick with a recipe, maybe I'll get a starter up and thriving and try this recipe! So cool that you have wheat from a neighbor, living the dream!

We are very lucky to have such an amazing agrarian community. Yes...I've found perfecting one recipe at a time makes all the difference in the world.

I need to find some starter! I love the ease of your instructions...makes it easier for a novice like me:) I am going to try the whole wheat bread. My last attempt at buns was a fail haha!!

Baking is typically such a science...but bread is an art. If you post in some Facebook groups I guarantee that someone has one that's rocking :) Good luck! I look forward to seeing your trials.

Cool! I've been making sourdough for about a year and do a similar recipe on a larger scale. Have you read about the benefits of soaking grains to reduce phytic acid? I have a post all about it here:

I'm a friend of Rob's I saw your hempcrete project. I have a sister in Mayerthorpe that is into all this stuff as well, we visited Rob last summer, would be cool tobring more ppl together in the area!

Hey there! I have heard of but not yet tried! I will definitely check out your post...Thank-you for sharing that! Absolutely! Community building is so important. We would love to connect!

I've been adding lard to an apple pie, but not yet to bread. Got to test it one day. Welcome to the Steemit world of bread :)

Hey there! Thank-you for the welcome. Oh...absolutely to pies :) I like my pie crusts with half butter and half lard...flaky and flavourful!

You know, I use lard because I raise pigs. However, before I started raising pigs I also used cooking oil and it turned out great too. Thanks for reading the post!
