What is a Snood?
If you guessed a type of head covering, you are only half right. It is that long appendage hanging from the top of a Tom turkey’s forehead. The interesting thing is he can extend or extract his snood depending on how excited he is. Notice the snoods on the two Toms in the picture above. One has his snood extended and the other has it retracted. When he gets excited, he can also change the color of his head from white to pink to red or blue. A hen also has a snood, but it is small and she cannot change its size.
There have been studies done that show a hen will prefer to mate with a tom that has a longer snood. I guess she finds it attractive.
Cheers, Tim and Joann

Love this post!
When I was a kid, I learned this bit of trivia about snoods, and enjoyed stumping people by asking them what a snood was. They usually thought I was making up words...
Thanks for sharing!
I hope to have turkeys in the next year or so. We have raised chickens for over 8 years and tried to raise ducks and Guineas but they don't like to be penned for the night thus the coyotes and owls got them.
Since I love to work with wool, my biggest dream is to have sheep.
Thanks for the post @hansjurgen!
Well...I learned something new today, I guess that means I am done for the day! Thanks Tim...always find the info you share interesting!
