Jack, Jenny, Mule, or Hinny
A Jack is a male donkey. A Jenny is a female donkey. A Mule is the offspring from a female horse and a male donkey. A Hinny is the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey.
So a mare and a jack make a mule. A stallion and a jenny make a hinny. Mules are more common than hinnies because it appears that stallions do not find jennies too attractive, so mating is less predictable. On the other hand, jacks are more predictable when mating with a mare. However, neither a mule nor a hinny can reproduce.
Jennies make the best guard donkeys and we are planning on getting another donkey again when or flock of sheep is a little larger.
Our cat and donkey were best friends
We also had a jack named Jack for a short time. He kept trying to mate with Tilly, but he was not tall enough.
Bonus fact: A male mule is called a John and a female mule is a Molly. In the case of the old television western Gunsmoke, Festus called is john mule Ruth.
Have a great day and thanks for your up-vote, Tim and Joann
Great tid bits!
really nice photography, now i am fallowing you,, dear
Do you have pet dogs around your guard donkey? We have a family dog and I have heard that the donkeys can be aggressive towards all dogs no matter what?
Donkeys hate dogs. There was more then once our donkey almost killed the neighbor's dog.
That's what I thought. Thanks
Very nice post! I learned a few things today!
I always would get mules and hinnys confused, could never remember which was which.
I also never knew about how a male mule is called a John and a female mule is a Molly! Interesting!
Wow very educational. I actually feel like i've leant something new thanks. Nice set up too. Lovely to see the can and donkey getting along 💯🐒
