Buckeye hen in the leaves

The hens have been delighted with the great piles of leaves we’ve brought up.

There are Barred Rocks and Buckeyes in the flock this year.

Hens love something different, particularly if it involves food. They are searching for grass bits and worms and bugs.

These leaves serve several purposes:

• Stabilize the manure
• Neutralize the odors
• Cover the soil
• Provide entertainment for the hens
• And if there were leaves in summer, it keeps the pen cooler

So the pen is now ready for winter.

You got leaves!!! :D

Did things finally dry out enough, it are these still the ones from your neighbors?

We had 3 days of no rain, so we went for it. They were starting to freeze down.... They are all from our yard. I suspect the ones I normally get from others they bagged wet and took to the dump to compost. I can't take wet ones...

Yeah, that really sucks to miss out on them.

Melissa has said no more leaves, and they've all fallen. I suspect this week's trash will see the last of the leaves until the live oaks shed in spring. But we got a bunch, so no complaining here.
