A Luxurious Lotion Recipe

Dry Hand Destruction Time!

IMG_1681.JPG

Our so-called spring weather has been a little in the lackluster department, and my poor vitamin D deprived integumentary system, especially the phalanges containing portion, is at threat level Sahara on the moisture containing scale. A normal person would have just said they were suffering from dry skin, but obvious statement is obvious.

That said, I don't like overly scented lotions. When I walk into a department store that is running an olfactory system competition, I usually start tearing up like I am an an onion slicing exhibition. Too much scent is just never a good thing. The less is more approach that I favor tends to bleed through in the ingredient department too, any time I see a product with multi-syllabic ingredients, I pause for a minute in phonetic mourning before moving on to a less complex formulation. However, it seems the less complex the ingredients in a lotion, the more costly the product. Paying ten dollars for something that is mostly hydrosol really chaps my beeswax lip balm. So, in the vein of frugal homesteady folks across the globe, I just decided to whip up my own formula.

As with all of my recipes, I never go out and by ingredients just for an idea I have. Rather, I go rummaging through my abode's alcoves to see what is available to craft my inspiration with. I had a bottle of aloe gel, some coconut oil, sweet almond oil, rice bran oil, beeswax pastilles, and some orange EO. Bonus!

Lotions are just an emulsion, like mayonnaise, so throwing one together is pretty simple. One thing to be mindful of is that simple doesn't always mean quick. You do need some time to let your lotion cool down before finishing it, so give yourself at least a couple hour block from start to finish. You won't be working on the creamy skin happiness potion throughout that time, so if you are like me, you could totally work on the millions of other to do's that you have going on while you wait for your oil phase to cool! Yay!

IMG_1665 (1).JPG

The lotion crafting party started with the construction of my super-fancy improvised double boiler. I put water into a little stainless steel pot and placed a larger stainless steel pot onto of it. Double boiler in a pinch success!

IMG_1667.JPG

Into the pot I plunked the legend that is coconut oil. Is something even worth making if it isn't composed of coconut oil? At this point in my Internet education I am seriously considering that it's not. (Sorry, the rain is making me slightly more sardonic than normal.)

IMG_1668.JPG

Next, I added some beeswax. Now, beeswax is not a true emulsifier, but you know what? I like the smell and end result of many of the formulations that I make with it, so I continue to use it. I totally mind my own beeswax.

IMG_1670.JPG

The last bits of oil that I added were rice bran oil and sweet almond oil. I love both of these oils for pretty much the same reason, my skin adores their presence! Sweet almond oil especially is a favored fat of mine. Sigh.

IMG_1672.JPG

Now, an important lotion making tip to note is to fully melt your oils in the double boiler. Do not remove your oils from the heat until every bit of beeswax is fully melted! You do not want chunks in your lotion.

IMG_1674.JPG

IMG_1675.JPG

Once your oils are fully melted, pour them into a blender. I use a hand held immersion blender for homemade cosmetic production, so I always place my melted oils into the mixing cup that the blender came with. Then I can randomly giggle as I walk by the cooling oils as the concoction looks like a urine sample ready for analysis. Heh. You want to let you oils cool to room temperature, at least 90 minutes or so. I let mine cool for a full two hours.

IMG_1679.JPG

Once cool, it's time to add the aloe gel, essential oils if you want them, and a preservative. Then it's blend, baby, blend time! After whipping the mixture for a bit I end up with this creamy, dreamy emulsion of skin moisturizing dreams!

IMG_1680.JPG

And no water-based emulsion post would be complete without a note on preservatives. Any water based cosmetic has to have a preservative. Something that inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and mold. You've safely got about 72 hours to use your water based cosmetic before it needs to be tossed if you don't preserve it. There are preservatives out there for every life-philosophy. I have had a lot of luck so far with Leucidal SF, a lacto-bacteria derived from radishes preservative. Most preservatives are added at a rate of 2-4%. It's worth noting again, just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It is not good to be slathering yourself in cultured bacteria, mold, and yeast. Another thing that helps your lotions last longer is to dispense not dig. Pour or squeeze your lotion out, don't stick your fingers in the jar. Inhibit the little beasties as much as you can!

Aloe And Coconut Oil Lotion

1 cup aloe vera gel
1/2 cup coconut oil
1 Tablespoon rice bran oil
1 Tablespoon sweet almond oil
1.5 Tablespoons beeswax pastilles
5-8 drops of orange (or your choice) essential oil (optional)
preservative added at the recommended rate

Fully melt oils and beeswax in a double boiler.

Pour melted oils into a blender or bowl and let fully cool to room temperature. This usually takes a minimum of 90-120 minutes.

Add aloe, essential oils if using, and preservative. Blend until mixture emulsifies and thickens. This usually only takes a minute or so.

Store lotion in an airtight container.

And that my friends is all there is to making a formulation that makes my skin sing like it is prancing around in an emollient shower of aloe happiness. Oh, and this lotion will thicken slightly over time as the aloe evaporates! Enjoy:o)

And as always, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's fully moisturized iPhone.

Your house is certainly better-stocked than mine for impulsive lotion manufacturing. I have the coconut oil and essential oil on hand, and some vegetable glycerine that I bought two years ago, the only time I've ever made my own hand cream. I would definitely need a trip to the store!

Well, you are totally ahead of me, I need to restock the veggie glycerin section of my potential cosmetic horde! LOL!

For some reason I can totally see you cranking out various cosmetic applications in that kitchen of yours:o)

If you had been looking at the right time, you could have seen me doing so exactly once. I really ought to try again! (AFTER obtaining the necessary ingredients!)

I think the beeswax is a brilliant addition. I imagine it offers a sunscreen effect and some durability to the mixture.

Myself I use hair-conditioner as a moisturizer ... high end stuff but it is still cheaper than high end moisturizer because you get a lot more. And it works wonderfully:)

Ahh! I use hair conditioner as shaving cream, but as a moisturizer, that's excellent!

And I so love beeswax, it is such a wonderful substance, and it has the most amazing, subtle scent:o).

A better choice than petroleum jelly ... I bet. But I imagine you have to get the amount right.

Oooh boy. Well this is interesting. So what makes this lotion water-based? I made my own “lotion” out of coconut oil and Shea butter(room temp, not melted) whipped together with orange EO. It’s in a jar on the counter and I use the dig method. I haven’t gotten sick or anything yet??

Hi there! Aloe gel is mostly water, so the lotion is definitely water heavy in composition. Your coconut oil, shea butter "lotion" sounds like a classic anhydrous(water free) salve, so you should totally be good to go on the creepy crawly microbe front. As in, fat only formulations tend to not need a preservative. If you look on the label of any water based cosmetic you'll see some paraben or other form of preservative, but a body butter or oil based salve can last for a long time without a preserving agent. And I am by no means an authority in body care land, all of my intel has come from painstaking research and trial and error, but I love it:o) Yay kitchen chemistry! And I am so glad to hear that you make your own stuff, I love, love, love Shea butter and orange EO!

Omg how amazing is your homemade moisturiser. At first i got little too excited thought you were making a cake! I was like hold uppppp! That ent no honeycomb its blimmen beeswax.lol.Well i so have to try this out.I normally buy a manuka honey moisturising lotion. It's a little expensive but is fab for my skin. Will be having a go at this. The only thing i may be tempted to do,is throw in some, flour, eggs and sugar.I can't help it, it's the pamcooks in me.I cant work in the kitchen without munching on something.lol.Thanks for the step by step guide👍🏼👌❤

Hi @pamcooks! I love it when I see one of your replies, for I know that mirth and magic are contained within!:o)

LOL, I guess I could have left out a couple of ingredients and made a coconut oil honey cake or something, perhaps I will do that some day in your honor. I totally know what you mean though, whenever I smell coconut oil and orange essential oil I have to stop what I am doing and go nibble on something ,cause smells and kitcheny things, right?

Normally I would be more perky and verbose in my reply, but I had to take a 1000lb animal on an adventure today, and my awareness is flatter than a bit of beeswax on a hot sidewalk. Or something, lol! Hope you had a fantastic weekend!

Aww bless you i am comedy central here. I think your the only other person that finds me amusing, ohhhh other then myself!!😂😂

Yep i am a grazer in the kitchen. Please do bake something when you get chance sure they will be fab.My fav bake of yours were the lemony muffins for your co worker. They looked scrummy!

Mmmmm i do love the aroma of essential oils. The smell makes me want to do a bit of yoga and meditation. The only problem is i do the opposite and eat yoghurt and medication😂.

Awww i appreciate any comments from yourself no matter how long or short. You got alot going on with the rearing of the animals! Bless you!x

Ohhh...@alovelymess may be into this. She loves natural lotions. Great write up!

I've been using the lotion on my hands and arms for quite a few days now, it is amazing! Hope @lovelymess likes it if she gives it a go:o)!

If it has coconut oil, I am a fan! Wow just the smell always takes me back to a trip to Hawaii when I was but a pre-teen. Very cool, Kat.

It's only been two years since I was last in Hawaii, and I am having major withdrawls, you totally should wander back across the ocean OGP, cause you know, you need to smell the coconut oil and stuff!

You know you are right, Kat. I looked into some cruises and was pleasantly surprised that they are relatively reasonable, considering that includes food and lodging. Plus it seems more fun than flying.

Ok I am going to totally embarrass myself just so you, one of my fave Steemers, can have a laugh... The always awkward but not so Old Guy in Hawaii. You know always a ladies man and all that...as if lol.

P1070733.jpg

That picture is LEGEND! You've been bringing it for awhile I see, dang OGP! Seriously, thank you so much for sharing, and I hope to hear tales of your Hawaiian sailing before long, love traveling by sea!

You know, you seem to be rather tall, so I imagine flying could totally cramp your style and quadriceps! As I am diminutive in size, a fact of which everyone is constantly reminding me, I don't mind being tucked into a seat so that I can be on the beach in Kauai in 6 hours time. However, I did grow up cruising the waters of Southeast Alaska, so my fondness for gliding on the salt water is there too. Guess what method of conveyance that I desired would depend on just how fast I wanted to get somewhere. Although, I have a feeling a floating party boat full of interesting people would totally make your day:o)

Wow, I totally rambled there! Need to get cooking, today's post shall be a comestible one! Have a good weekend my friend.

excellent recipe worthy of me to safe and try it out later. thank you for this as always

Oh wow! Thank you kindly for such high praise:o)! Hope you enjoy it if you make the lotion!

Eating homemade foods is usually much cheaper than eating at a restaurant or buying processed foods from the market...So delicious recipe @generikat...
