Investing as a homesteader

Yesterday I had a great chat with a fellow homesteader about money. It really hit me that money effects people differently. As I watch people on Steemit talk about money and investing, buying and selling, and of course life changes I can't help but think about what I would do if I had enough to invest.
Investing
I would define investing as putting yourself into something that may have a future positive return. This may be investing in family, investing in people, investing in gold, or investing in your situation. There is no limit really on how to invest your time, effort and energy.
When to invest
When you are investing yourself...anytime is good. Sewing into others is always going to have a great return. When to invest your money in things is really up to you. I would hope that this post is read by people that have a positive financial situatuon.
Debt
Most of my life I was up to my neck in debt. At one point we were juggling two mortgages because we had to move for work. We came from a place of big salary and big bills. The biggest thing I noticed is that I wasn't really investing in anything. I was owned by my job and my debt. I had no time to give to my family and certainly no time for friends.
How things have changed
Now days we have a very different perspective. We are starting to put a lot of thought into our situation. Being a homesteader has lined things up for us. Hard work and planning has lead to us being debt free. This is sort of bitter sweet. Since we don't owe money to anyone, we only make as much money as we want....sometimes we just enjoy another cup of coffee. This has also come with some restrictions. We aren't able to buy anything with out planning for it. That is ok...I suppose it helps us save money we don't have.
The future
We had a great idea about the future. First off we trust God and know that we are always going to be ok. Second, if we ever have money what would we do. Steemit has certainly given us a nudge in the right direction and I have no plans of slowing down.
Well, I think that we are starting to see more clearly the idea of sustainable survival. As investments begin to pay back, what do we buy or reinvest in.
Infrastructure
This is pretty important and often over looked. Infrastructure is pretty much any ground work that keeps your life moving forward. We can all get alittle money and immediately think of things we want to buy...socks, undies, tv, new phone, laptop. While some of these might make us more comfortable they aren't really things that keep us going.
As Steem continues to hold, we all have a chance to make things happen. My advise is to live as though the entire internet will be gone tomorrow. As a homesteader what are somethings that if you had, you could carry on like nothing happened?
Hoop house/green house
Canning supplies
Equipment, tactor/skid steer
trailer
Truck
Good tires
Chainsaw
Splitter
Fencing
I think you get the idea.
For us we aren't much for online investing, so when our money comes out what would we do...
Our plan
If money holds, we have some goals. We are working to finish our house inside, and planning to move.
If i had enough to invest it would be into a new house.
Solar power
Solar heaters
Hoop house/green house
Canning supplies
Cellar
When we all talk about homesteading in the sense of being more sustainable, not just how/where we currently are, but why not make things easier and more efficient.
If we invest wisely now, it may help when we are older. I don't know about you, but I know that some chores are hard and we are only getting older! 🙃

I see investing in the infrastructure of our homestead as more important than having money in the bank.
This past year we invested in a polytunnel and two greenhouses. They give us an ongoing future return of an extended growing season and more food production.
This coming year if the money comes in I want to invest in solar PV panels and a battery backup system. That will give us some resilience and make some savings on our electricity bills.
Wow! That all sounds great! It sounds like you are crushing your goals!
This is SIMPLY the words of a true homesteader!
What a GREAT post! Makes you stop and think what goals you have and how to achieve them!
Yes! That is my only hope....to encourage others to think.....what is truly important to their being able to continue forward!
As I begin to finish the shed and get more organized around our place it is important to consider all aspects of the future. I try to work on some improvement each day. Investing in ourselves is invaluable. Planning for better ways to grow food and improve the property is an every day occurance. A little bartering works well too. Sometimes better than money. I love your energy and enthusiasm. Wishing you both a Happy 2018! 🐓🐓
Yes! Thank you! If everything falls apart what do we have...only what we have prepared for.
I think investing into wind and solar power infrastructure definitely helps and pays off long term. Looking forward to your progress in the homesteading :)
Hey! I agree. The idea that maybe, not matter what we would have a source of electricity.
love this. good for you ...so awesome
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Ya hit me right In the feels....I do not want to get old. ahem.... older.
I am glad you enjoyed it. I love thinking and having an idea of options. We have really seen what happens when we don't plan haha.
+1 for infrastructure. My goals are a hoop house, tractor, wood chipper, saw mill and solar panels. I’m currently working my way out of debt that accumulated from health issues, having a new child, and a lot of chaotic stress spending when things got really rough for us. Things are going well now, and getting back on track. I think the key to reaching your goals is emergency savings, and smart investments, whether that be time or money.
Yes! Great goals. I am glad to hear things are going better. I think the important thing is for people to have goals...think about tomorrow.
