What Are The Best Batteries For Off Grid Solar And Wind Turbine Use?

in #homesteading8 years ago (edited)

I did a lot of research for 4years before finally deciding on what batteries to use for running my entire home off grid on wind and solar.

Basically what it came down to is ease of maintenance and longevity and charging speed.

I discovered Deka Solar AGM batteries had the best stats and this is why...

Here is a video on who, what, and why, of these batteries:

I've been following this conversation from the other post about the solar panels. Now I understand a lot more about the AGM batteries. I've seen them before, mostly car batteries, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money on them. If they'll last that long with proper use, they're well worth the money. I don't know what the average lifespan is for a standard deep cycle lead acid battery under the same conditions, but I'm guessing it's not nearly as long.

i think standard lead acid deep cycle batteries are 3yrs but not sure. glad this video helped you :)

yooper? are you in upper peninsula of Michigan?

Yes, I am. South central U.P.

:) i went to NMU in Marquette for two degrees. love it up there...

ok...got it.
questions: price, dealer locations?
it kept saying 12 volt are there other options?

lowes hardware store is where i buy mine. you can also google the name and look for a dealer that way. they do (i believe) come in 6vdc, 12vdc, and 24vdc... I only use the 12vdc because everything in my home runs off 5volt USB except my computer which is 19vdc and my wifi router and water pump which is 12vdc. make sure to get each battery the same size and kind and preferably same brand/model. this helps them to last as long as possible. and 100ah generally runs $350 at lowes for the Deka AGM's

There's a lowes right up the street from me...not a mile away...wonder if it's the same ?

I dunno if these are AGM or not...It's a pretty shitty website.

the battery would say SOLAR AGM big on the side or should. also AGM is needs to be charged a certain way different than normal batteries so it will definitely say AGM.

lowes wont have in store generally but they do order them from the store if you know what i mean. just go to customer service and tell them you want to order/buy DEKA AGM BATTERY and they will look them up and help you choose the right one for you.

you can also go here: http://www.eastpennmanufacturing.com/applications/renewable-energy/

and this is my battery: Solar Deka Battery.jpg

looks to be about the same size as a car battery
is there any reason to get one any bigger?
how long do they last you?

100ah version is same size as my truck battery. they tend to last 50yrs ive been told if you dont deep cycle them. deep cycle is when these drop to 33% charged but if you double that and dont go less than 60% they never deep cycle. each battery has a limited number of deep cycles it can go through before it dies. ive never dropped below 50% on mine and try to stay over 60% as best i can. but i need a few more batteries. i like the 100ah size because im disabled and cant carry/lift anything bigger than that. best to keep them all the same size if putting them on same system so they charge evenly. my goal is to get 10 of them for a total of 1000ah...

I drove a Big Truck (Heavy Haul) for 20 years..I carried four cranking batteries and had to replace them every two years...I had the biggest highest Ah I could find...can't recall what it was.

Solar must not be as tuff on battery life?

not if you take care to not deep cycle them. though i know someone who cant keep a battery for more than a few months without destroying them. you do need to charge the AGM properly to but the controller can be set for that easily.

My battery tray should hold a lot of them uh?
about two foot wide...elven inches deep...and ten or twelve foot long.

I have four used telecommunication batteries, they are going on 19 years old and have about 50% capacity. Hope that helps.

most definitely i would think :) my toyota has a highbred AGM deepcycle cranking battery in it. i use the truk for a emergency generator for home with a inverter in it.

Wow. Your post is superb. Thanks for this post. Well done.
