DIY Pumpkin Spice Mix without the chemicals

in #homesteading7 years ago

I wish I had thought of posting this one 2 months ago. The timing would have been much better. Oh well, here it is. It will be listed in the Sotall.org Knowledge Directory, so you will have access to it from now on.

There are two versions of this. The first makes just a single tablespoon. Sort of a one time use thing. The other makes enough you will need a half pint jar to store it in.

One Time Use Size Pumpkin Spice Recipe

1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp ginger
1/4 rounded tsp nutmeg
1/4 rounded tsp cloves

Mix it all together in a bowl to mix and you have a tablespoon of mix to use.

1 1/3 tbsp cloves

Mix well and store in a half pint jar for use when you need it.

Pumpkin Spice is not just for pie!

Most people think of pumpkin pie when they think of pumpkin spice, but there are many other ways to get that wonderful flavor working for you and many can be done at any time of the year.

1 - Mix a little in with your coffee grounds and brew up a cup or two of warm and wonderful Pumpkin Spice Coffee
2 - Toss a cup of your favorite nuts into a skillet with a little butter. Stir well to coat the nuts, then sprinkle with your pumpkin spice mix to suit your taste. For a little sweeter treat you can sprinkle with a little sugar too.
3 - Pasta with pumpkin spice, butter and sage (see recipe below)
4 - Use it as a seasoning for popcorn. Sprinkle on after its popped and enjoy!
5 - Use it as a spice for any sweet vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, rutabagas and squash
6 - Mix with butter and serve on waffles or pancakes instead of syrup.
7 - Whip it into homemade or store bought vanilla icing for use on cupcakes, cakes and cookies.
8 - Instead of making plain vanilla homemade ice cream add some pumpkin spice to dress it up! This works great if you want a gourmet type ice cream but your budget only allows for plain store brand vanilla.
9 - Melt some white chocolate, mix in pumpkin spice to taste, then dip your favorite nuts, pretzels or whatever in and allow to harden.
10 - Spice up some how chocolate with it.
11 - Add it to rice crispy treats.
12 - Add to your morning oatmeal.

Pasta with pumpkin spice, butter and sage Recipe

1 Pound Pasta, Cooked. Your choice of shape
1/4 pound butter
2 tbsp pumpkin spice
1/4 cup fresh or 1/8 cup dried sage
1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)

In one pan cook your pasta.

In a skillet, melt butter. Add sage and stir on low heat till the butter starts to brown. Add pumpkin spice and sugar. Mix well. Pour over your drained pasta and stir well to coat.
