Urban homesteading, another big step to healthy eating
A few weeks ago we moved from one apartment to another in the same town. The reason? well that is easily explained, its a new building with one room more then we had before and a balcony that is double the size at least. Its also a lot lighter and there are better facilities. All that for a difference of 50 Swiss Franks per month more.
A bargain I say...
So with all this space extra on the balcony I decided to upgrade my growing efforts from 4 planters to another cool addition. We got this raised planting bed with storage space underneath.
It set us back a bit in cash but think of all the plants I am going to grow in there.
For the moment I have Thyme, Sage, chervil, lemon balm and some basil that sadly did not survive the last cold spell.
The little rows of green leaves that are popping out of the soil there are different kinds of salads and radishes. and in the last row we have some Strawberries.
The planters are still present and I used those to put up 2 cherry tomato plants and roma tomatoes and even more strawberries.
And to top everything off I have Cress growing in the little white pots hanging on the side.
This is my first year using a raised bed like that and it opens up a lot more possibilities then the planters did. Now I wanted to check with the community if they had experience in these and what would be the best crop to plant in those to get a good productivity going.
My goal is to at least take a small bite out of our veggy budget so any experienced advice is welcome.
I like the idea of the planters hanging on the side of the raised bed. Now I'm wondering: why did I never think of that? :0)
yea, I found it a great idea myself, lol.... I use one for the tools as well
Good project you have. Have you thought about doing some vertical farming?
should look that up and see what the possibilities are... I am indeed limited in space so up is an option
You could multiply up to x3 your production doing it. But first try to look for best production rates, sun requirements for plants and flavour of your preference, selecting the best varieties of plants for your balcony.
What fertilizers are you using? Do you made your own substratum?

this is really cool. I've been itching to do something like this but haven't pulled the trigger. I have a small patio with sunlight all day.
