THE EARTHSHIP HUT BUILD: 20 VOLUNTEERS, 14 DAYS AND $5,000 USD BUDGET! DAY 1: PREPARING AND LEVELLING THE GROUND

in #homesteading6 years ago

This blog documents a two week build with volunteers and led by myself (Alex Leeor) & Jonathon Kalviac. We set out to demonstrate and teach how to build a small but functional home in just two weeks and on a tiny budget of $5,000.

People came from all over the world to be a part of this build and learn the skills needed to be able to build for themselves. For many of them this was a life changing experience, and a few have gone on to build on their own.

This build is testament to the fact that anything is possible with motivation and the right group of people.

There are millions of people seeking this knowledge with a desire to live off-grid and become self sufficient. I hope this video gives you the inspiration to try it for yourself!

I have decided to present this first part as a movie that I just made especially for this post! Please let me know if you like it!

It is a very good first stage, it seems very interesting to me, a few months ago I saw the houses made with mud, the truth is something very good, I see that in the United States wood is used a lot for construction in Argentina where I live , we use a lot of brick and cement, I do not know if the wood will be as resistant and effective as the cement, but what they present in this project is really very good, here in Argentina there are house projects for low-income families where volunteers carry out in two weekends, it is a basic habitable housing with everything necessary to start, that project is called www.techo.org. Thank you very much for sharing

thanks for the comment! You cant compare wood to high thermal mass, passive solar gain construction in terms of performance. The latest Earthship in the UK is maintaining 21 degrees in snow with NO heating !!!

That is pretty impressive, 12 degrees Fahrenheit, without any heat. That would a very comfortable temperature to sleep in. :D How long are the Earthship's expected to last after each one is built?

yep, its incredible performance really.. nothing else comes close to Earthship performance .. especially in extreme climates. I made a typo above and fixed it.. its 21 degrees celcius not 12 farenheight!

The main structure (tyre walls) of an Earthship has been estimated to last 1000's of years. An entombed tyre will retain the pounded dirt indefinitely with almost zero degradation. The finishings, and roof will of course last as long as a normal roof would..

I think 21 degrees Celsius is a nice one for sleeping in. I'd be comfortable with that temperature, not too cool or too warm. :D
That is very impressive. I wonder why they don't use tires more in building of home all around the world. Just think how much space that would save in landfills everywhere. :D
I look forward to seeing the next stage. :D Well done to you and all the people working on these, its a wonderful way to share your talents. :D God bless you all. Have an awesome day! :D

Really cool, can't wait to see the next videos and the progression of the house. A solid foundation is the key to long lasting success, or at least thats what the proverb says haha. the Nepalis Power!

thanks Jason! The foundation is absolutely key! yes yes!

Reall its very interesting work done by them..nice video.

cheers! we worked REALLY hard on this one!

Ofcourse you are ..

I couldn't get the video to load at first tonight for some reason and thought I was going to have to try again tomorrow, but I refreshed a couple of times and it finally played. :D
That looks like a lot of hard work but everyone seemed very happy to to be there. Its so wonderful that even the children got to help. :D I'm looking forward to seeing the different stages of this build. :D God bless you and everyone working on this project. Have an awesome day! :D

thank you so much..the kids made it that extra bit special with their amazing energy and creativity!
glad u got it working in the end!

Me too, it was very interesting to see how much work went into just the first stage of leveling and placing the tires. :D If you've got kids around that are capable and willing to help than its to their benefit to help out and learn a good work ethic and community mindedness. :D You are all a wonderful blessing to all those that will be able to live in the Earthship's. :D God bless, have an awesome day! :D

what a creativity!! It's really interesting..

thank you.. amazing what you can do with a load of old tyres!

Thanks @eco-alex great to be able to watch the start of this next great project. Looking forward to seeing it all progress x

thank you my friend..Glad you stopped by! ;-)
