Ukranian Eggs
Every year we try to make these fabulous eggs.
We will most likely make them over the next week or so.
We normally start the week before, but this year so many things kept us away. Time truly does fly.
They are made with eggs, beeswax, dye and varnish. I prefer to keep the eggs raw, they dry up in a few years. If i am going to make hanging ones for ornaments, I blow the eggs out when they are finished. I use a syringe to pull out the egg from one end. Hollow eggs are harder to hold under the dye.
It's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon. Love the smell of the beeswax.
This is so lovely. Could you explain how you do them? We have blown eggs before, and we have also made boiled ones in the onion skins for dyeing, but I have not heard of this unique process before. Very pretty!!
When I get time, I will post pictures of the process this week. :)
Basically what you do is start our with your egg. Non boiled. Room temperature.
I use white eggs as the example. So anything that you want white, you apply the wax to seal in the colour.
Then you go to Yellow (working your way to darker colours). Anything that you want yellow, you cover with wax.
Then Orange. anything you want orange, you cover with wax. so now you have 3 layers of wax. You just keep building and building.
When you are happy with the design, you melt off all the wax. I do mine over a flame, with a soft cloth or paper towel. some do them in a very low oven. I have had some explode....that is enough to make you cry...lol
I then use a varnish. If i blow them out, I just put a hole in the top, so that I can hang them.
It is very time consuming, but we love doing them!!
These eggs are beautiful pieces of art. When I was growing up we had a neighbour lady who used to make these very intricate patterns on her eggs. I remember sitting with her on her porch and watch her decorate these eggs...
What a great memory! We love to do them. it is so easy to spend days on them. :) xoxxo
A long process to make those, and you girls have the patience for it. Great art and creativity here. Good job girls! xx
Thank you!! we should have you out for an afternoon to do some!!
Such a beautiful tradition. I've painted eggs before but the wax and varnish is a new idea to me.
They are so beautiful, when you take the wax off all the layers, to see the beautiful work of art!!
Hello! Wow, what a nice post - really appreciate this. Will definitely share this. Wish you all the best.
thank you! Blessings to you!
