Quail Eggs in the incubator, Monty's new friends ready to grow and replace poor Gobbles.
My quail are laying up a storm. Today, I got two eggs that were so huge, they were almost as big as our small chicken's eggs. Here you can see the Chicken's egg the two large quail and the usual size quail egg.
As I have mentioned in my other post about the demise of poor Gobbles, the 'special' quail and Monty's sad state and mourning over his lost little buddy (scratching at the aquarium house where Gobbles lived) I have saved up a few days worth of eggs to fill the incubator.
I forgot to mention, in my last post about my quail, that my attempt to use my new young broody hen for a quail mother has also got kaput.
However, I think this is more due to her young inexperience and the stupidity of our Polish hen. She kept getting in Leto the Hen's chosen box where I had place the quails eggs and pushing her out to lay her own eggs and then also stepping on the quails eggs, splasho smasho, quail egg omelette.
I have not given up on the route of quail hatching, though, and when Leto next goes broody I might move her to a separate little hen house I have which is currently empty and see if she does stay on the moved clutch, let it be her private chicken/quail raising home. I'll keep you informed when that occurs.
For now, I want more quail! And I want them from my own quails eggs. And having also had the mistake with the incubator with power outages and such, I have now moved the incuabtor into our main bathroom in the house. I have disinfected and sterilzed the incubator and it is ready to make some new friends for Monty and some new egg layers for all of us.
Here you can see it takes price of place in the bathroom next to the toothbrush holder.
And it is full! I put a couple of my chicken's eggs in too, just for good measure and as possible best friends for Monty, if he doesn't take to any of the quail, it's hard to replace a best friend.
So, we shall see what we shall see. In 17 days from today hopefully there will be a post about new little quail chicks and a happy little Monty.
For now, you can enjoy Roderick, the wild quail eating outside the pen of my domestic quail. He is gonna find a way to move in there one of these days, I just know it!
I'm glad to see you have your priorities down for the egging. None of this 'personal hygiene items over the incubator box' sort of falderaugh and such. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. I still got my fingers crossed and hopes on high alert, even though my last comment in the first post was only 5 minutes ago. But every push of PMW's helps...
A wise Brit once sang, "every sperm is sacred" and to us it's every "every quail egg" or at least the few I've bothered to gather and place in my Styrofoam pseudo chicken nest, maybe not the ones I eat or the other's the chickens squashed...anyhoo I have to protect Monty's future friends at all cost, even at the cost of dental hygine or possible electrocution. I'll just prop this incubator carefully at the edge of the bath whilst I reach for my copy of Quail Monthly, carefully...carefully.
I hope that thing is OSHA approved for tub immersion. Don't want to shock those new little Quaile (pl.) before they hatch ( :
I'm pretty sure calling that particular group of Brit's wise is the understatement of the year. Sure do miss their take on life. The slapping fish and wacky gamesmanship in the giant field, running all about STILL cracks me up. Of course, so does B.Bunny or Foghorn, so it's possible my bar is a tetch below the top notch on the standard.
Have you been using my toothbrush to clean off the eggs again?
I shan't ever tell ;)
AHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Monty is going to be soooo happy to have some new feathered friends! Good thinking on giving Leto a safe space next time. I'm betting it will help.
You should participate to the steemit sandwich contest with one of those eggs eheheheheh
sandwich contest? Do tell, I make a mean quail egg, bacon and avacado!
this one! https://steemit.com/steemitsandwichcontest/@jaybird/steemit-sandwich-contest-week-25-contest-now-open-4-5-prizes
@donnadavisart: By the way.. Do you have any idea about keeping quail and bunnies in the same cage? I want quail for their eggs and as a training for chickens. My daughter wants two bunnies. I was wondering if they can sahre the space.
I have not heard of this. I researched letting my chicken and quail share a pen but found out that there are some diseases that they could pass to one another so opted out of that. I would think there could possibly be a worry of cross disease, especially as the rabbits would be in the quails droppings. Possibly, if they had a good sized outdoor run with soil and other things, it might be better, but then you have to worry about the bunnies tunneling out, as that is their nature. I think start googling it and watching youtube videos about it.
Let me know what you find out!.
Hi @donnadavisart. Thank you for your input. I will get more into it and share my findings here. All the best.
