You can use mulch too but in our case the hay was cheaper. We do have a wood chipper but it isn't currently running at the moment. Or else we would of put down our own mulch.
Cardboard seems better to keep the weeds down. They suffocate the ground better! After it's gone I used mulch tho. ;)
