Great Chicken Breed: Orpington

The Orpington is a breed of chicken named after the town of Orpington, Kent, in South-East England.

Created by British poultry breeders at the turn of the 20th century by crossing Minorcas, Langshans and Plymouth Rocks to create a new hybrid bird. The Orpington chicken was made to be a hardy breed that can survive England’s most bitter winters, while still laying at a good rate. They lay around 160 good-sized brown eggs annually.

Orpington chickens are fluffy, friendly, and beautiful. A double purpose breed, they are quite hardy, and come in many colors (blue, lavender, buff, black, and white). Buff Orpingtons are colored like a shade of gold. The lighter colors of white or buff Orpington chickens may make them easier targets for predators.

If you’re after chicken breeds that also make good pets, the Orpington is a great choice. They are one of the few chicken breeds that like being handled and petted, and they favor human contact and attention, which makes them a perfect family chicken. They are very calm and docile birds which sometimes can unfortunately mean they are subjected to being bullied by other birds, so be wary of this when mixing them with your flock. Despite this, they are one of the more practical chicken breeds-tolerating confinement well, foraging when necessary, and are very cold tolerant. They are richly feathered which makes them extra soft and cuddly, and they come in both buff or white varieties.

These heavy-set, fluffy and cuddly chickens will be a figure of grace and dignity in any coop. Orpington chickens may seem homely and commonplace however these powerhouse egg laying wonders will make a great addition to any chicken lovers flock.

This chicken will live longer than the commercial ones especially when they are raised as pets. Damn, it's just so hard to kill a pet hahahahha.

Wow fantastic hen's indeed, they are looking so strong and healthy than other chickens and there production of eggs is also great, yes no doubt these chickens are the best choice for egg lying purposes, thanks my friend for sharing some great information about chickens with us, worth reading & watching, Stay awesome.

I think these chickens can flourish in your country because of the cold.

well in our region punjab we have only 2 to 3 months of cold and we have a very long summer approx 6 to 7 months and the temperature in summer sometimes exceed from 50 and it is extremely hot and you know we some times fry eggs with sunlight just for fun but there are regions present in our country where temperature is mostly cold like Muree and Kashmir, i think these chickens can flourish in those regions perfectly.

It is good to know that.

I love buff orpingtons! They are my all time favorite breed. They are so sweet and I just can't resist a fluffy chicken!

Me too! They're the best for so many reasons, but most of all because they're so cute when they run. :)

You can inquire about from your local chicken farm on how to obtain it or Google is your friend.

Quite a tamed and kind chicken. It will not be hard to catch it when the moment arrives ha ha. It is good breed of chicken of having to handle cold weathers because of its double coat. It seems that it is also a good breed for a chicken pet because it is just easy to get along with and not get easily frightened.

Yes, most chickens are timid and frightful of people. This one seems so tame! I wish I could raise this breed.
