CHARACTERS OF THE FARM - Episode 4 - Silkie Chickens

in #homesteading6 years ago

If Mamakirbs has a favorite animal on the farm it’s a close race between her dogs and these fluffy birds! The Silkies are often a farm favorite for visitors to the Daddykirbs Farm as well. They are quite showy and just make you want to snuggle and hug them! They are FLUFFY!!!

Silkie Chickens

Daddykirbs Farm Silkie Chickens

We really aren’t into breeding animals here on the farm so much. We don’t believe there needs to be too many animals added to the local population. These adorable chickens are the one exception to that. We absolutely intend on focusing some energy on selecting and breeding Silkies. In fact, we recently purchased a few more birds from another flock to deepen the gene pool here on the farm. We aim to make the most beautiful fluffy Silkies possible. Mamakirbs is a great Silkie mama!

Aren’t those fluffy chickens cute! Tomorrow we’ll meet the chickens that work for a living, the Main Layers Flock. Until then, have fun on the farm!

They are adorable! Sharing to show some cute chicks on twitter!

To me they just look kinda weird like they have cotton balls stuck to their heads. I have heard they get very broody and are good for incubating the eggs of other breeds of chickens. Do you use them for that purpose?

I can see where they would be her favorite. We never had those on our farm. But they are cute looking.

Those are some characters alright 😉 I have to say I have never seen one of those before. We plan on getting some chickens in the spring might just have to get some silkies too. Just got to keep my labradors alway from them. 😜

Their feet are so cute. Are they bread to be eaten?

In some areas their gray meat is considered medicinal, but we don't tell mama that 😉

I LOVE Silkies! We used to have on called Norman on our section he was ace! We now have buff orpingtons instead, I would love more silkies in the future!

Silkies are not only cute, they have one of the best temperaments of all the chicken breeds. They are sweet and usually like to cuddle. They make great pets. We have a few of them here at our sanctuary and we love them!

Every time I see one of these, I can't help but smile. It's good their disposition is friendly considering how 'cuddle-able' they look.

Glad you are sharing the knowledge with the Girl Scouts. Teaching the next generation is the future.
