Preparing The Farm for Uncertain Weather - Life on a Family Farm
This was a crazy week this past with week. Ole hurricane nate had decided to throw a monkey wrench into our daily routine here on the homestead, & this is a short youtube video on how we prepared our family farm for Hurricane Nate.
The main thing we needed to do, was to make sure all our livestock, and other farm animals would be safe & sound. I was particularly worried about our chicken tractor, bc it is so lite & it also has that tarp on top of it. I just knew I was going to look outside during the storm & see it flying like a kite. So I staked the chicken tractor down on all 4 corners to help prevent it flying off in the wind. Another concern for us was our new batch of broiler chicks that we just got . We were a little worried that if the power did go out, that would cause the heat lamp to go out, and could possibly cause us some issue with the newly hatched chicks, but luckily that did not happen. Also we made sure all the pigs(american guinea hogs) had a nice dry area to go into, so they could get out of the wind & rain. Another thing we did was to keep all the free range chickens locked in their coop, instead of letting them outside that day. this way we would not be trying to round all the chickens up during the hurricane. Then the hurricane came, & luckily it was not as bad as the weathermen had predicted. The power stayed on, & no washing issues...there was one old medium size pine tree that did come down, but it was not near anything, so it was not that big of deal, after we saw where it actually fell. But No other damages at all, no big washing or flooding for us!! We were so thankful that hurricane Nate was not as bad as they had predicted!!
Thanks for watching!
Cog Hill Farm - 2017
love your pig!
When it comes to farming its always something!
Good job!
ALWAYS!! LOL
Glad to hear all is ok and you weathered the Hurricane. This year has been CRAZY for hurricanes. We just left eastern NC in July where we spent 7 years there and only had 2 really good hurricanes. Now in Missouri, we gotta get used to the severe thunderstorms with possible tornadoes!
Flooding of the creek behind our house has been a concern. Our first night in the house it poured and I went outside to check the window well pump and the creek sounded like raging rapids!!
Again, glad you guys are good!
