Homestead Land: Spring Walk Through

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Aimee and I have been working on the permits for our house build and filling them out jogged my memory about a video we made last spring; I'm glad it did because the video is very relevant right now.

If you haven't read it already you may want to check out our Earthworks Plan post which explains in better detail the earthworks plan we have for this year.

DrivewayOur driveway will follow these trees around, on contour, until the yard site.

Here, I take a look at the path of the proposed driveway, plus I walk across part of the property and observe the natural flows of water that run across our land. Examining how water moves through your property is worthwhile doing, even if you have owned your place for awhile. You just might notice something you haven't before.

WaterWater slowing flowing across part of our pasture during spring run off.

A good time to look at the flow of water would be during spring runoff or right after a heavy rain when water is still moving on the surface of the ground. Direct observation, in combination with topography maps, should give you a very good idea of how water moves on a piece of land, helping you to figure out ways that you can harness it. Taking this action also might prevent you from making costly mistakes, like putting the driveway into a seasonally wet area that has the potential to turn into a mud hole.

culvertA culvert that our mini stream runs through collapsed, causing a sink hole!

I also take a look at the culvert that our mini stream runs through and it needs fixing. We were aware this issue existed when we bought the land but it is a matter we will have to address in the near future because approximately half of our acreage is inaccessible if this culvert collapses.

I guess that there is a small gutter/creek at the bottom of the land, and if yes you are very lucky to enjoy time over there just after a little walk. wish you all the best @canadianrenegade

Thank you, it is a beautiful piece of land.

it's nice sir... ☺ best of luck for your work.👍

How exciting! I wish you all the success in the world! xo

Exciting but the planning is also stressful 😬

That's the truth. I've seen a couple of people lose hundreds of dollars worth of gravel from not checking things out ahead of time. That's not including the time and work to make it right again.

Great advice

I can't get dtube to work so I'm glad you summarized! How are you going to fix the culvert? Do you have to dig the whole thing up and replace it, or can you just repair the sinkhole spot?

Yeah, I meant to mention that too. I could watch a small bit, but dtube is the worst video platform I've seen. I can maybe watch 20% of videos I try. It wouldn't even let me comment until I got back to Steemit.

It's weird but I have few problems with it. I don't know if it is worth the effort for you guys but emptying cookies and temp files or switching browsers might help.

It might, but I just use chrome and every time I empty cookies I lose a bunch of passwords, so I try not to do it. Sometimes it works fine, but sometimes it just sits and spins.

The whole thing is rotting out so we have to dig it out with a backhoe or excavator.....
