Nothing Goes to Waste

in #homesteading7 years ago

Here on the homestead nothing goes to waste. Every Friday I harvest microgreens for the weekend farmers markets, and the 'clippings' go to the chickens. They absolutely love this stuff scratching through it eating roots, stems, seed hulls and all. The only thing left is the coco coir/vermiculite mix I use to grow the microgreens in, and they happily scratch that along with some of their own fertilizer into my pasture improving it along the way.

I'm entering this photo into the @papa-pepper Combination Photography Week 17 photo contest, so here is my proof photo.

When we had chickens.., we had a large bowl on the counter. We would loada it with all our food scraps and peelings. Once a day one of the kids would haul it out to the coop.

I swear the chickens recognized that white plastic bowl and whenever it was headed their way they would squawk and get ALL excited. It was like a comparison of taking the kids to a fast food "drive-thru"!

We do the same thing, and get the same reaction from our hens. They are much better at turning kitchen scraps into fertilizer than composting them. If we want compost we'll shred leaves each fall and put them in a pile.

Cute Chickens!!

ah, here it is - what a great way to close the no-waste cycle of using everything up!
