Making bread!

in #homesteading9 years ago (edited)

A couple of times a year me and my hubby makes bread together. I use a recipe from my grandmother and we bake them like my mother-in-law used to do them. I've been told that they used to bake them like that in old wood stoves, putting the bread on the bottom of the oven at first and then putting it on a oven tray or rack further up to give it some color. She used a oven tray in the bottom of the oven in her electric stove and a rack further up like we do now.
This bread is called "mjukkakor" were we live and everyone has their own way of making them. I use some special bread spices and milk doing mine. I use a couple of other recipes for making them in a frying pan.

There's a traditional bread made by the sami people that is made in a similar way, only they use a round griddle or a flat stone (over open fire) to make them, they are called "gahkku" or "glödkakor".

It ended up being like a little story in pictures. So here it comes!

Until next time, be well.

There's a lot of history behind this kind of breadmaking. I wasn't thinking about it at all when I wrote this. So this is a link to another article (in swedish, sorry) but the pictures show how it's done in a more traditional way. There's a small cabin only used for baking called "bagarstuga" with a brick oven. I have a cabin like that right across the street, I have rented it a couple of times making a lot of bread with a friend of mine. Cabins like that are available to rent on many locations here in Sweden.

wow ...

Very interesting to see this. I'm a regular bread maker so always interesting to see other methods. Do you use any yeast in this sort of bread?

Yes, there's yeast in them.

That's an interesting bread you've made there, wish I could make breads but alas mine never work out. following.
