RE: Plant update 12 April 2018 : looking in the big grow tent

Corn takes to long to grow for up here, it get to 3-4 feet then it frosts and kills it. Some people who have high tunnels get better results. Thinking hard on how to make one.
I forgot to plant my mini broccoli before I took the photo. I planted like 35 broccoli too. 😁

Sort:

There is a variety of multicolor hard corn that was developed in Montana for the harsh climate there, the seeds are sold by Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. The variety is called Painted Mountain. I'm going to be planting this variety this year to use for making hominy.
The corn is supposed to be cold hardy and early, so it should be interesting to see how it grows here. According to the package, it can also be eaten fresh, although it probably won't be as sweet as most sweet corn is. You can get the seeds from their internet store.
There is also a variety of popcorn called Tom Thumb that is a very early corn, about 60 to 70 days. It has little ears, and the plants get about 3 to 4 feet tall. I've planted that in the past at the end of May and harvested it at the end of August. I got those seeds from Annie's Heirloom Seeds, also on the internet.

Wow! Thanks for the info on where to get corn!
