Homestead update : 24 April 2018

in #homesteading7 years ago

It’s been relatively quiet and calm. Have an update on the baby girl goat, I planted some more stuff, and cut some trees.

So let’s start with the ducklings and gosling.

Ducklings and the gosling are doing well. I introduced them to outdoor stuff, dead leafs and what little green I could find. It is still to cold for them to go out, and there is still a lot of ice and snow.

I went and finished up some trees. My Polan kept throwing the chain, so I had to use my husbands saws.

I recycled some planters from last seasons greens houses.

I planted two trays of tomatoes, one tray of green beans, a tray of radish, and a tray of rhubarb. Probably to late for the rhubarb but thought I should try at least.

Last but not least our baby goat.

She threw a splint and was walking on one splint. So I decided to take the other off. She is doing well and I am very glad. She is our first female to survive birth.
Warning RANT commencing
I have seen some harsh posts about ‘well your on a home stead animals die’. Yes, and so do people. If we do not have a hard time with the death of an animal what kind of species are we?
Maybe there is something wrong with the person who says it’s no big deal to kill animals and have death on your homestead so nonchalantly.
All life matters.
I had several baby animals die in a short amount of time, I think that justifies some sort of emotional reaction.
End of Rant

It has been raining for two days. The chicken yard is a mess, and under it is ice. You really have to watch your step. The temp have been in the 40’s. Oh and the ground is finally starting to soak up some water surprisingly! All summer last year is rained and rained, we had 6” of mud and yuck in some places. It never did stop raining last year, it just turned into snow.
It is the beginning of the construction season here in Alaska and they are clear cutting and tearing up crap. They are also putting in new power lines.

Colorful goats. Upvoted. Thanks for sharing. Very magical and mysterious.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed

Is that one laying on its tummy all sprawled out to eat/drink?
They are soo cute!

Yeah it was a “broken” gosling getting a drink.
Chickens, ducks and apparently geese stretch their legs out from time to time and stretch, this was the first time I had ever seen one do both legs at once. Reminds me of when our dog does it, we say we broke the dog.
If you look closely you can see two ducks doing it too.

Gosh, you've got a lot going on! So many adorable babies! Baby goats absolutely melt me. I can't wait to get out of town so I can enjoy some goats of my own. Until then, I'll have to enjoy yours. 😄

😊 Yeah we do, once the seasons turn warm it seems we are in over drive to get stuff done.

For sure try for rhubarb! Since it can't be harvested first year, it won't really matter if you plant it late. Just make sure it's covered this winter.
Eeeeee my heart, look at those baby birds and goats! <3 <3<3
And look at you and your badass self chopping wood. Your day was far more epic than mine haha!!!

Why can’t rhubarb be harvested the first year? I didn’t do that last year and mine where huge.
I’m suppose to cover them? I didn’t do that either, for last years.
I know I have floofs! So many floofs!
I can’t take credit for the big ass tree. My husband use to do forestry and fight wild fires. He does the big trees. I’m to much of a chicken shit. LOL I do the ones that are 10 inches and smaller. I was just finishing up some of his work, he hates limping and back cutting. So I went and finished the big rounds, part of the big ass tree already down. Then limbed two trees and cut down toe more pines. 😁

Geeze, I've always been taught from seed you can't harvest the first year or else they don't come back the following years. Something about getting established first. Then next spring when it comes back you do your first harvest. Yours came back this year regardless? That is too cool!!
You are still a badass! I am chicken to hahaha;) still sounds like you were kicking ass to me!

Interesting! I got my first two rhubarb from walmart( Alaskan grown ), they were about 6” tall. I cut them when harvesting, I didn’t pull or twist like some people do when harvesting. The stalks where about two to two and a half foot long, about an inch and a half wide. I harvested only a few at a time as to encurage growth.
