MY SMALL SCALE POULTRY FARM
Poultry farm is one of the fastest growing businesses in Nigeria and in the world at large, I have been in this business for two years now and I have been able to generate income for my school and another personal stuff without boarding or asking my parents and siblings… I started with a small scale farm and today I am planning on expanding my poultry farm.
A lot of youth are shying away from agriculture, saying they can’t get their hands dirty and seeking for a white collar job but ignoring the fact that 70% of the economy revenue is generated from agriculture.
I started my poultry farm July 2016 with about 30 small chickens which I had to feed until they were matured and strong and by December that same year i sold about 28 chickens and made 30% profit excluding the capital I used in starting up.
Note the birds where rear for meat purpose only excluding its other products like egg
Starting up a poultry farm is not as difficult as it may sound; it only requires your time and commitment. Below are the breakdowns of capital investment for 50 small chickens. Firstly you could need a cage that would house 50 chickens like mine… note when setting up or building a cage for your birds ensure it is spacious (for easy movement of the birds).
I have two cage which I use in running my poultry farm for the main time as I am already building a bigger and better cage that would house more than 100 birds…. The cage was constructed to easily allow the bird’s dropping to go directly to the ground making the bird cage cleans.
Maintaining and cleaning up the poultry house doesn't really take much time, thought it is dependent on the size of the birds. i have a small scale poultry farm, but i have been able to generate income to sustain the poultry farm and my self.
It takes up to 3 months for a small chicken to fully mature, which means you would need to feed them for about 16 weeks rounding up to about 18 bags of birds feeds. I usually feed my birds 2 times per day and ensure that there is always water available on the water can and I also change the old water on the can with a clean one. I also practice another feeding alternative to save cost; I would add up corn shaft and mix it with their feeds.
By the time the chicken is fully matured I sell them take out my capital save my profit and start all over again (a new set of production).
