RE: What If We Could PLAY For The Rest of our Lives? An On-Going Experiment.

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

What a fantastic post. I had a minor revelation about play 6 months ago. I found that I was wasting the precious little free time I had with stupid little puzzle games on my iPad. Entertaining and absorbing, often a welcome relief after a long day at work. But I found that there was nothing gained by the time spent other than mere amusement.

So I deleted my games and made a list of all the enjoyable things I could do to play, while actually bringing value to my life. The list was longer than I would have guessed, and it has profoundly changed the way I spend my down time.

Great post. Good thoughts. I saw you on SteemTrail's Discord channel. I will be posting something significant - a brain child of mine - in the #philosophy-trail within the next few days. I'll see you on Discord!

Awesome!!! That is amazing. Do you use this list for just your 'downtime' or have you started to apply it to your 'uptime' as well?! Inquiring minds need to know :)

Thank you for sharing, it definitely adds another element to my thoughts :)

I'm following you now, so I look forward to your post!

It's an interesting distinction you make - "downtime" vs "uptime" - and it probably reflects how I view my world (for better or for worse). I sense a challenge in your question! Lol.

I actually work a good number of hours - maybe 60 per week. However, I work at a non-profit business and find it very rewarding (even if I frequently come home tired). I don't know if I would call it "play," so much as "joy." Maybe you can argue they are one and the same - if it brings joy, can it be considered play? It is an interesting question, one I'll have to think on some more.

Regardless, I definitely see the value in finding a spirit of playfulness in the hard work that we do.
