The Walkerland Homestead Kitchen Reno Update

I visited my kitchen cabinets again today (lol) and got to see the ravens carved onto the doors for the first time. We gave him complete artistic freedom over the design!

Everything is coming along beautifully however ... We have run into one hitch. There is plumbing running right across where two drawers are. Into the interior wall on the side. Neither the carpenter or myself thought about plumbing when doing the designing. I'm not sure what he will be able to do. Shorter drawers? Turn it into a cupboard instead? I'm annoyed with myself for having not thought of this detail.

Hand carved cupboard doors with our beloved raven

Cupboard for above the stove. Small drawers will run along the bottom for sugar, coffee, and whatever else! Two glass doors and the back still needs to be put on.

Counter tops have been built. All of the wood is local from small small mills. The drawer fronts need to be added still ...and the issue with the plumbing and drawers will have to be solved. Living in a log home, with a concrete slab floor and no basement there isn't a lot of things that can be done to change the plumbing either. :(

I forgot to take photos of the pulls and other details but all the handles etc have been made by hand as well. It's really been educational and exciting to see how all the pieces fit and to know that someone has made this furniture with skill, by hand.

Another week or so and we should be working on ripping apart the remaining cupboard in the kitchen and installing the new ones! It's been two months since I destroyed our kitchen and I am ready to see this project all tied up!

Happy Monday! This comment is to inform you that your article has been linked and featured in the most recent Weekly Homesteading Newsletter! Thank you and have a great day!

I am so impressed with the craftsmanship! The Ravens are stunning. Your kitchen is going to be a thing of beauty. I would just make the drawers shorter. You'll find a use for them, no problem.

I love the crafted wood joinery! Very impressive. Good luck with the plumbing. I think short drawers is your answer.

The cabinets and counters are just beautiful!! The hand carved raven is a wonderful touch, especially since it's painted too, to make it stand out. The design suits the wood grain perfectly.

I'd just make the drawers shorter, if the plumbing doesn't stick out from the wall too much. When we put in our propane cooktop we had to take a couple inches off a drawer for the same reason and I don't even notice it :)

Thanks! I am really happy with it. It was not at all how I had pictured it but I really do like it.

We've come up with a plan, I can't wait to have all my pots and things put away again. The kitchen has been a disaster for over two months now! Just a week or two more of waiting!

Now I'm curious, how had you pictured it looking? Because I'd pictured a flying raven!

More ... delicate. I though it would be carved around the edges and corners and not the whole door. I had originally shown him a bowl and talked about folk art. I expected some feminine things like flowers, bees etc along with the raven. I am really happy with it and my husband really likes it which is a bonus.

Ahh, like more subtly worked in. As long as you're both happy with it, life is good :) and the work is gorgeous. It's a very strong looking raven and should show up nicely from anywhere in the cabin, for sure!

This looks so cool!

That is going to be such an awesome kitchen! The ravens are beautiful!

thanks! I am quite excited. Another week or two and we should be cooking in it!

Haha! I am the type who would probably not cook in it for the first week or two, because it will be all shiny and clean and as soon as I start cooking it will never be that way again... LOL!
I hardly ever get NEW appliances. @longsilver can fix almost anything, and so I use them to death then go buy another second hand one. Well, I wanted a glass top range so he got me a NEW stove a couple years ago. The first thing I did was roast coffee in my kinda beat up aluminum pan and scratched the crap out of the top. 2 days old... sigh... Oh well, many delicious meals have been cooked on it in spite of the scratches!

I prefer used for that very reason! The stove is already scratched and I've been really careful. I think the zipper on my sweater scratched the stainless steel about ten minutes after it was brought into the house. Having to worry about being gentle with appliances is absurd. They just don't make things like they used to!

No doubt! My son in law is an engineer, and they actually taught him that women LIKE new appliances, so those old ones that never broke down were "over engineered" and "not what consumers want." 🤦

I am sure that's how they justify the crappy workmanship of today and I suppose in some senses it's becoming true. Reality is that we let them get away with degrading the quality of products. They don't even stand by their products with real warranties anymore. I'll go to great lengths to fight a manufacturer when I feel they've cheated us.

Yep. All sorts of nonsense these days. I am old enough to remember when "Made in USA" meant something, something good. Now it means all parts manufactured in China then assembled in the basement of Amazon...

You are really fortunate to have someone around who can fix almost anything. We aren't nearly as handy. We sure give it a try - it's why we've bought a really old tractor etc that we have a hope of learning the mechanics of.

So gorgeous, such attention to detail everywhere, how beautiful. Your home looks so warm...I can imagine you are ready to be done! So exciting! <3

Thanks! This is very exciting. I'm still just so in awe of the fact that this kitchen will be ours :)
