Weekly Chicken Update -

It has been cold cold COLD!!!
The chickens are doing surpringly well for as cold as it has been. We were down to -4 for a couple of nights. Sixteen chickens all piled together in their coop. Did you know just one chickens puts out as much heat as a 100 watt bulb? Their coop is well insulated so you know it's toasty in there.

I've been letting the ladies and gentlemen out more often. Their coop is in a partially shady spot and I want them to be able to chase down the sunbeams when they peek out from behind the clouds. They are happiest when they are being let out of their enclosure.

Pete (or maybe Repeat), Lloyd, and the other Dove Sister

The Dove Sisters are two solid white young chickens that were from the same clutch of eggs. They were hatched together and spend a lot of time with each other. Pete and Repeat are twins also. They are large roos who only tussle when one of the ladies is involved. If one is going to pounce, the other will follow.

I'm also happy to report we have gotten more eggs! We have had 10 eggs since the cold weather started. Maybe I should start my count over now that it's the new year. I might. Only two of those eggs were layed since the beginning of the month.

Above is Pigeon. She figured out that the hay is a good place to catch a nap or lay some eggs in privacy.

So that's all. The chickens are happy and healthy, even if it is cold outside, and we are slowly but surely getting eggs. There is a 90% chance of snow all day Sunday so I'm actually looking forward to that. It has been years since we had a good snow. Our soil is starving for nitrogen and moisture. We need a good snow.

Thanks for looking and I hope you are staying warm! Have a great one!

Nice to hear they're all doing well in spite of the cold. And still getting eggs... Bonus!

We have even found eggs that we missed at "closing time" that froze over night! The shells are always cracked though so I just toss them to the dogs. Thanks, @aunt-deb! :)

Ooops! I guess that just one of 'job hazards'. Just fyi, I saw this yesterday. Might be helpful...

(Oh, and I think she meant boiled instead of poached...)

Happy Sunday! This comment is to inform you that your article has been linked and featured in the most recent issue of the Weekly Homesteading Newsletter! Please check it out if you have the time! Thank you!
