Urban homesteading .... giving it a try!

in #homestead7 years ago (edited)

Urban homesteading is practicing self-sufficiency through home food production and simple living in a city or suburban environment.

I live in a big city, London Town. The opportunity to grow my own veg and fruit is restricted. I have no garden or back yard. However, urban homesteading is a beautiful collision of farm and urban life in urban and suburban areas. It means finding a level of self-sufficiency no matter where we happen to be living.

It encompasses the pounds of winter squash and bags of potatoes that could be lining in your basement stairs as well as all the foods that we buy in bulk. Some people can and freeze to stretch out summer's bounty and avoid buying expensive off-season fruits and vegetables during the winter.

It's also in how we cook. Doing things like eating our meals at home and baking our own bread and cakes also give us a level of self-sufficiency.

There's also global awareness. With our economy on the ropes and new concerns over commercial sources of food emerging every day, it makes a lot of sense to pull back and lower our impact.

So, I have decided to try and grow some easy fruits and veg on my window sill. The first fruit I have picked is raspberries. They are currently in season and go nicely with yogurt or ice cream.

Week 1 - one rasberry has already grown.

I've also planted some lettuce and mint.

If anyone can give me any tips or recommend any indoor fruit and veg please do!
