November Homeschooling Miscellany

in #homeschooling6 years ago

The kids wanted to go trick or treating for Halloween, so we ended up doing some quick Halloween research and reading and decided that the proper way to do things was not to do the commercialised going around begging for candy but to give the neighbours candy. However we had no time to prepare for that and @pixietrix's birthday was kind of vaguely in the vicinity so we decided to do a "spooky themed" birthday party instead.

@pixietrix did up a master list comprising of other lists, and lists for food shopping and various party supplies. JJ took care of the food as he usually does and Nanna and I split shifted picking up party supplies over a couple of weeks.

One of the things @pixietrix had wanted was a banner so she and @shadowlioncub worked on making one up:

They wanted a creepy but not too creepy message, their younger cousins were going to be coming after all!

They made zombie hands out of jelly and some gloves found in the pantry:

Unfortunately the gloves they'd found were disposable ones with powder on the inside so there was no eating that jelly! At least they know how to do it and what kind of gloves to use for next time.

One of the kids' aunties had generously offered to provide the birthday cake and on hearing that the girl child loved unicorns, this was provided:

That went down a treat though JJ had to be explicitly told a few times to make the slices smaller (he was cutting them large as he didn't want there to be leftovers but that thing was rich).

The gymnastics girls had fun doing human structures on the trampoline when they weren't flipping out:

@shadowlioncub had fun learning how to dismantle one of the old phones we have lying around the place that are kept around either because we figure out things to do with them down the line or in the case of dead ones like this, for pulling apart to see what's inside and how they go together.

He was very carefully following some instructions on Youtube but eventually stopped from a combination of me worrying about a piece he was trying to pry off flying into his face and after he got to a point where they needed some heat that we a) didn't have and b) wouldn't trust him with even if we did as neither of us could directly supervise at the time. Me being ridiculously paranoid about eyes I think I am going to push safety goggles on him in future!

After spending quite a while (probably a couple of years now, oops) intending on getting the kids blogging to encourage writing, and after sussing out steemit for 11 months, I finally decided to make the kids blogs on there, as they could then earn some cryptocurrency for their efforts. The great news is they got really excited and are now actually wanting to write things (which is so much easier than trying to get them to do the mind numbingly boring workbooks, which hopefully means I won't have to buy them anymore and can instead spend more on cool physical notebooks that are fun to write in, interesting books and maybe subs to things), although having to prepare for end of year shenanigans meant they have yet to write anything further than the introduction posts they made. The less good news is that apparently the company that was forward thinking enough to come up with blogging for cryptocurrency was not forward thinking enough to not be ageist which means that we'll be using an alternative front end that doesn't have stupid rules. We're currently using mspsteem as I've been told that they'll allow them (despite having cloned steemit's ToS but then again they've also cloned their logo including the text) so we'll see how we go.

This post also appears on my blog.

SBD rewards from this post will be split between @gorc, @pixietrix and @shadowlioncub.

Thanks for looking! ^_^

The steemaroo divider is free to use. Ask me nicely if you want an upgoat/cute critter footer.

I don't think I ever asked how many kids you had, when I saw all the girls on the trampoline I said "they can't possibly all be yours!"

So your kids all have steemit accounts now? The ones you are splitting the payout with?

LoL I was only borrowing those ones for a few hours XD Yep the three I'm splitting the sbd rewards between are all mine and all on board :) Though it's likely going to be more a "savings account" type thing for youngest as it's hard to get him to concentrate long enough to write even a short post.

Not sure why I didn't check out your post so far, perhaps the difficult name, haha, but I stumbled upon it via your response on Nomadsoul's post.

Nice to finally see the face behind the name. although I only see your kids faces in this write up :)

I like your writing and your kids seem to have a fun and interesting life.

Bye for now!

P.S. I like your goatee ;)

My nym seems to be a big cause of consternation XD Even to this day my partner complains about the consonant to vowel ratio and we've been together for a while now!

You're not likely to see my face, I'm not photogenic and usually taking the photos :) There is a possibility I may pop up somewhere in the future though.

Thanks! :D

Haha! I am a word guy myself and am usually very good at remembering words or atypical names, but this one beats it all.

Talking about faces, what I meant to say _ I'm sure you got that - was that I like how you get a feeling/ picture of a person, by reading their post. Written words in a post usually have way more depth to them than chat talk, even if the chat is (about) deep shit.

Talk to you later!

That looks like a lot of fun getting the party together. Nice cake too!!

Typical Mom with the safety first... I burnt myself so many times playing with the soldering iron when I was mucking about at home... never told Mom though!!!

I also think the age thing is stupid.. My 11 year wants to start as well, and could probably add more value than some of the adults are currently putting up here...

It was a really nice cake (both in appearance and flavour!).

I'm only concerned about safety when there's a chance of serious/permanent injury or death. Otherwise if they break something because they decided to jump off the high thing even though I told them the landing might not be as safe as they think then they can deal with the consequences of their own stupidity XD They're normally fairly good at risk assessment, it's just youngest that needs extra assistance with making good decisions/outright told that he is absolutely NOT under any circumstances doing that cool sounding dangerous thing which has a higher chance of ending in death than glory.

I think you should totally get your 11yo on board as you're probably right on the value add thing (I disproportionately hate that particular buzz phrase so much it's not even funny XD).

I should also get my kids following people that are interesting to them

I can't wait to see what the kids come up with! It's funny how @shadowlioncub was tinkering with the electronic device while everyone else was playing outside. I was exactly the same way growing up. Well, minus the philosophical questions. I mean, I thought about them, but I kept them mostly to myself.

What's the deal with using mspsteem? I'm not sure why you would need to use it. Am I missing something?

That was actually on a different day, I managed to fail at making that clear XD There were 4- kids around so if we were going to do electronics it would have been big safe kits! Unfortunately we've managed to lose our Snap Circuits (hmm might be time to get another one).

No one would talk philosophy with you? :<

At some point (I say because I didn't notice it when I signed up, maybe it was added in at some point after or maybe I'm just freaking blind and somehow managed to miss it) steemit put a thing in their tos saying that kids under 13 weren't allowed. So we use something else. Also it helps out MSP which I don't mind doing.

goatsig

It's not that. I felt like I couldn't talk philosophy with adults haha Maybe it's a culture thing.

Hmm.. But aren't content on other apps covered by the ToS in Steemit as well?

But talking philosophy with adults (or any given person who might have more wisdom and experience) is how you learn! Or maybe how I learn, but not necessarily philosophy because I'm pretty hopeless with that XD

It could do. Steemit and the steem blockchain appear to be two different things so I applied the steemit tos to steemit not to the steem blockchain. Does that make sense?

goatsig

You should've told my younger self that! I guess that's why I learned much later haha!

Yeah, I get that. I just thought that the ToS was all-encompassing. Huh, that's weird though. Unless they're limiting adult content, I'm not sure how they get around that age clause.

If it were a normal website like what we're used to it probably would be. It's supposed to be decentralised hence I don't consider it all encompassing :)

As far as I'm aware that particular rule was not about adult content, it was more about privacy, with websites not being allowed to collect personal information from kids. Apple and Google got around it with subaccounts. Prior to the subaccounts Google seemed to get around it by letting parents make accounts for their kids and give the kids permission to use said accounts, and also provided lots of useful tips and tricks for staying safe online. I'm still not sure how far I can trust the Googleborg itself but they did have some reasonably good tips XD And also ensured future customers by getting them in young. Which seems a sensible thing for this type of new and interesting tech to do too, But what do I know :D

goatsig

Ahh I see! I'm happy that our parents didn't have that sort of dilemma when we were growing up haha! Thanks for the clarification there. I'm sure that when the decentralized revolution gets more headway, we won't need to worry about those kinds of restrictions anymore.
