Homeschooling Families Protest New Changes From Public Education Department

Homeschooling parents in Albuquerque, New Mexico, are upset over recent changes that have been made by the Public Education Department, which require parents who are planning on homeschooling their children to sign a new registration form that includes over 10+ ”responsibilities” that the state wants parents to allegedly recognize before they can homeschool their children.

Some parents have already protested the changes, rallying with signs outside of the Public Education Department that's located in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Parents feel that authorities in the region are overstepping in this matter by requiring parents to sign these new registration forms that would demand parents agree to acknowledging those various responsibilities, which they might not be open to.

It's alleged that the new registration form consists of a 2-page agreement and as one attorney has already criticized, T.J. Schmidt, the state won't officially recognize the right of those parents to homeschool until they have allegedly signed that new agreement.

Some parents have refrained from signing that new form and they've been vocalizing their concerns with lawmakers for weeks now on the issue.

Aside from requiring parents to acknowledge various responsibilities, the form also reportedly asserts that the Public Education Department would have the authority to force children to attend public or private schools if it is determined that their homeschooling education doesn't satisfy state law.

Prior to these proposed changes, the only requirement that parents had to take care of before they could homeschool their children in New Mexico, was they had to notify the state that they would be homeschooling. No lengthy registration form involved.

Legal experts and homeschool advocates are urging parents to move with caution now and not to rush into signing the new registration forms.

State authorities have since responded to the protests from homeschool advocates, insisting that it's their duty to uphold state laws and make sure families in the region understand their "legal responsibilities” as far as educating their own children.

Critics of the newly proposed changes, including some lawmakers such as Rep. G. Schmedes, have called the new form an unlawful requirement and there are a few government officials who have signed on to a draft letter that is seeking to oppose this policy. As well, some homeschooling groups have also reportedly instructed parents who haven't filled out the new form in its entirety that they are doing the right thing in only filling out a portion of the form.

Homeschooling continues to grow in popularity across the U.S., with students and families opting for this educational path at record levels today.

The governments really don't want people to be homeschooled or have the right to do anything anymore, especially homeschooling where the kids learn more things and are smarter and safer than really wasting time in school only learning what the governement wants you to learn or brainwash. They want total control over everything and everyone.

I agree. Government wants total control of kid's brain to brainwash for 12 years of the kid's lives.

Absolutely @hanamana. I totally agree with you.

I suspect the schools are trying to recruit more children for more state funding. I could be wrong. I’m not entirely sure how that works.

When I was homeschooling my sons, the principal of the local elementary school came to my home to plead for my children to be enrolled at the school. The school received ~$10k per student enrolled per year from the federal gummint.

That's exactly how it works.

Ah so I was kinda right then.

I can remember my years in the classroom and how much weight rode on pupil attendance. That's so sad.

Out of curiosity, are parents allowed to write the $10K allowance off on taxes for homeschooling?

Best regards.

Peace.

No, parents don't get any kind of tax credit or allowance for homeschooling. The school wouldn't share either, if I did enroll my kids. Seems like some kind of kickback would be appropriate, or at least better than nothing.

It's not like they'd need to hire anyone just for my kids, or expend any additional funds. Wouldn't have done it anyway, but I was curious LOL.

Thanks for the feedback @valued-customer. After giving it some thought, I realize that homeschooling is a business, technically speaking; even if the students/customers are your children.

That said, I do believe a parent could teach using a DBA for bank/accounting purposes. Anyone, this includes parents, who homeschool for a living should consult with a business attorney to see how to set things up as such.

Best regards.

Peace.

Along those lines, I was at an open house school function the other night and they were explaining why everyone needs to apply for free lunches. Even if you can pay for lunches, you should apply because they get additional fedcoat funding based on how many students qualify for free lunches.

I am quite strongly opposed to government indoctrination camps, err... public schools.

I didn't like them for damn good reasons as a child, and homeschooled my children without regret. They were far better educated than their peers, and I had no worries about the abuse that institutions cause, or are vectors of.

This battle will not end here. Indoctrination is necessary to the state, and homeschooling is becoming a threat to the viability of the increasingly oppressive police state America has become. Shots will be fired before this is over.

I expect loving parents to continue to protect their children, despite the demands of abusers insistent on getting their hands on their kids. Stand your ground, and stick to your guns. You are right to be concerned, and undertaking effective action to protect your kids, not only from those deranged individuals that seek to commit terrorist acts (in gun free zones, where children are as helpless as can be arranged), but from the state mental abuse and deranged curricula.

Thanks!

@doitvoluntarily More and more people are choosing teaching at home, institutions leave much to be desired, besides the teaching system is not good
