Our Homeschool Diary # 1: We Need to Purchase Books! - (let me know if you got these)

in #homeschool7 years ago (edited)

Our decision to homeschool was triggered by different factors - support for our son in a traditional classroom setting, financial and personal, which I shared here 2 months ago.

So why again are WE homeschooling?
● We find that the traditional school (at least the Filipino school that my son was in) cannot bring about the best in our son. They tend to have very low tolerance to our son's "behavior issues" - which as I have mentioned on my earlier post linked above, do not manifest at home. Hence, we as parents now take upon ourselves to hone him to become the best person he could be.
● Financial- Education is expensive. True. However since we are here in the UAE it seems particularly true here. (Lol) The tuition fees for primary students in Filipino schools here average at around USD 4,000 annual. That is already worth a decent university education in the Philippines! And considering the quality, I personally am not happy.
● Prepare him for the future. The jungle called life. It is true, what they have mentioned in the seminar today. "Remember your first day at your first job. Did the people you meet have the same gender, age, religion at the least?"
If we truly want to prepare our children for the future, then why would we keep them within the boundaries of the normal school setting when they can start learning from the world early on?

Finally, after the introduction seminar we attended in August, we opened our gateway to the wonderful world of Homeschooling when we officially enrolled through Homeschool Global Middle East almost two weeks ago.

We were subsequently given a link for an online i-Ready diagnostic test to gauge our son's knowledge - what he has already learned and to distinguish the curriculum that is just right for him.

The test was composed of 2 main parts - Math and Reading. As parents/guardians, we were not supposed to coach our son while he was doing the test. We only had to provide him technical support if in case he requires one. The math test was mainly problem- solving while the Reading was focused on comprehension.

There was no pass/fail on this test. As I said, this was just to see his knowledge level and learning capability.

Finally, after a week, we got the books list today.

It is up to us how we would procure the books, whichever way we can save. They gave though, a contact person who can help us on this task, along with a list of websites where we can purchase online:
https://www.aop.com
https://www.bjupress.com
https://www.christianbook.com
https://www.timberdoodle.com

Expensive! Whew!

Prospectively, we would have to spend around $300 plus shipping to get these books. There are homeschool support groups in our area with whom I am also in touch, just in case above materials are available with them.

Any homeschooling families out there, who have these books and are willing to sell, please let me know so I can also check if the logistics (shipping, etc) will work for us.

Good luck to your book hunting. :)

We'll try here in PH @zararina

I hope you will be able to get the books that you need. We use amblesideonline.org which is a free online curriculum. You just have to get the books on kindle or at a library. We live in Panama, so we brought the books with us or use them online. Shipping is crazy here too - no one has mailboxes and it's just a pain in the next and super expensive. I got a card today and it cost me $3 to pick it up! Hope you can figure it all out! I'll keep checking your homeschool posts to see what's up!
