HISTORY OF THE YOYO TOY

In the Philippines...centuries ago, there had been a round wooden toy with an attached string being played that was thrown back and fort, upwards or downwards and they called it Yo-yo. The word yo-yo was probably derived from the words "*come come" or "return". No one knows who is the real inventor of this toy but Filipinos had been playing it for centuries long before it came to the U.S.

In the 1920s... a Filipino by the name of Pedro Flores migrated to California and with him was a yoyo toy. He erected factories and manufactured it there and it became a big sensation until the big Depression came. He sold off his factories to a certain Donald Duncan, who trademarked the toy in the 1930´s ... and the company has been producing yoyos since then.

THE YO YO QUILT

Nobody really knows who first made the yoyo quilt and how it got linked to the toy itself.... it became very popular in the US at the time the Yo yo toy was a big sensation in the 1920`s. The resemblance of the two had been their round shape.. but as to who first made or began making the fabric by gathering its edges.. no one knows!

The americans brought yoyo quilt to the Philippines after the WW II and taught the women how to do it. This was also taught as a project in the Home Economics class in the grade school. I also made mine in Grade 5. You don´t need a sewing machine, just fabrics, rest fabrics from some past project or even cotton scraps.

The best material would be cotton or linen because they are the easiest to handle in terms of sewing as well as in the meintenance of the finished quilt. You can bring the pieces to any place, gather edges, collect finished circles until you have enough to piece all together into one quilt. Nobody knows the underlying reason as to why it´s considered a quilt when there is no batting at all.

I remember seeing one photo in a magazine showing yoyo quilt and the memories came back that I also made one as a young grade-schooler. I have fabric stash and so I thought of making one myself. That´s how I came with this quilt. It´s a work in progress for more than 20 years.. I already made more than 1500 yoyo pieces . At one time, I brought along 500 cut pieces for my family members to work on when I visited my family in the Philippines and they have done all the 500 pieces. I joined the gathered pieces when I returned home and made more.

Today, making this quilt is as easy as ever. I made my template out of a small plate. The size of the circles will depend on the round template you use. I used a muesli top, copied it on a board, cut the board´s round shape and use this to cut each fabric. Each are pieced together one by one with a running stitch and at the end a lock stitch or a knot . I used quilt thread in piecing because it´s very durable. The reference below will help you start your own.
