DIY - one of those love hate relationships

The thought of DIY sends shivers down my spine - I hate it. I don't hate it just for the sake of hating it, I hate it because I'm not very good at it.

When it comes to building things I'm fine as long all is perfect...but it seems that never happens. The issues generally arise when something doesn't fit properly as I'm not very good at working out solutions to those kind of problems; well tidy solutions any way.

We designed the kitchen in our old house to our needs. We knocked through into the dining room as the kitchen was tiny and the dining room was too big. We ended up with a room that gave us plenty of room for all our stuff. A few poor quality photos following a temporary lick of paint (we couldn't decide on the colour scheme so just used what we had).

Moving forward a few years we're in our newish house; we've been here just over a year now. Although the kitchen is hardly tiny, the space hasn't been used particularly well. It's long and thin with one end designed to be used as a small family dining area but this is surplus to our needs as we have a separate diner. Saying that I would like another breakfast bar.

Today's DIY task was to remove a small book case and replace with a wooden shelving unit. For once it all went to plan! It doesn't look pretty but it does mean the microwave is no longer on the much needed work surface and we can empty some of the tins and larger items out of the cupboards. It has been a game of roulette as to whether you'll have something fall out and hit you when opening. I've also been able to get the sous vide and bread maker out of the garage so hopefully they'll get used a little more.

Now I'm working again we can start saving for a new kitchen fingers crossed we'll be able to get all the in built and tidy storage we need again in a few years time.
