Once upon a time, humans started to celebrate the shortest and longest days in the year. This year, on Northern Hemisphere, the shortest day of the year occurred on 21st of December.

Winter Solstice

When in 46 B.C.E., Julius Caesar has reformed the calendar, Winter Solstice occurred on 25th of December. Around this date Romans had holidays called Saturnalia. Winter Solstice holidays were also a big event in Mayan culture and probably all, if not most of other cultures.

Summer Solstice

During this time inhabitants of the Southern Hemisphere were celebrating Summer Solstice.
