Are New Year Resolutions a Myth?

in #holiday7 years ago

As I grew up, I became accustomed to this thing every ‘normal’ person ought to have at the end of every year - just right before the new year begins, and that is a new year resolution.

We were expected to have it by the society, the religious society, and sometimes our friends and family, so much that it had become a cliche of some sort.

We write down a long list of negative things we want to change in our lives, the new year along with a list of positive thing we want to accomplish too.

Every year, our list is targeted towards some form of ‘the perfect life’ we desire and long to have - “if I could just get rid of all these negatives and accomplish all these positives this coming year, then I will feel fulfilled”, we say to ourselves, but we all know that nothing almost really changes.

It’s an endless cycle, and year after year, for most, it’s always the same goal repeated over and over again with almost little changes.

Towards the end of the year 2015, I wrote my first well-thought, ‘deeply from my heart’ new year resolutions, not that I have not been writing them before, but this was different. I really gave my time and thoughts to all that I want to accomplish in the new year (I even included some timelines). It was a very long list spanning a couple of pages, and after I was done, I felt proud of myself - I was confident that the following year was going to be different.

But as days turned into weeks and weeks and weeks to months, I watched as my resolutions remained unresolved… There was a lot to accomplish, but I wasn’t accomplishing almost anything tangible. But then something happened towards the end of the year 2016…

I had this 'one thing' that was very important for me to accomplish in 2017. I didn’t need to write it down because I needed to have it - I knew it, I talked about it, I thought about and I worked to accomplish. It was one goal at the time. Nothing else was as important as accomplishing that goal. I didn’t write a list of resolutions for the new year 2017… I had one goal in mind and I wanted it badly enough, so I labored to get it, and I got it. And for once I felt really fulfilled this year!

So, dear reader, If you had also experienced my dilemma - the endless cycle of unaccomplished new year resolutions, I think it may be time to take life - JUST ONE GOAL AT A TIME… and just maybe you may experience the fulfillment you seek.

The new year resolution allows you to forgive yourself for where you failed in the past year and set a new target for the coming, It is meant to be a positive thing for all you do and not a thing which only benefits oneself, as most use it now a days.
