THE NEED TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE OUR WATER RESOURCES
Water occurs in various locations and forms in the earth’s atmospheric system. It occurs as a gas in the atmosphere (atmospheric vapour), as solid and liquid on and beneath the ground surface. It is continually changing form as shoe on the diagram. Water changes from liquid to gas form as a result of evaporation and from gas to liquid in the process of condensation. The change of water from gas to solid state directly is known as sublimation whereas the change from solid to gas form is known as ablation. These changes involve either heat gain or heat loss. The change from liquid to solid is known as freezing while the change from solid to liquid is known as melting. These changes of state are responsible for the continuous movement of water from one location to another in the earth atmospheric system. The various locations of water in the earth’s atmospheric system and the estimated quantities of water contained in these locations are shown on the table below

The total global volume of water in all forms (liquid, solid and gas) is about 1360x106 km3 of which only 28% is fresh water. About 75% of this fresh water is tied up in polar ice caps and glaciers and a further 25% is located underground as ground water, most of which is not available for human use.Rivers and lakes constitute a mere 0.32%, atmospheric moisture 0.3% and soil moisture 0.5%. Therefore the unstable water on which mankind depends constitute a very minute fraction of the total global hydro cycle.
From the statistics presented above , we realise that the quantity of fresh water available for man's use is very very limited in supply.This is an indication that if we continue contaminating and pulluting fresh water suppllies then we will run out of supply not long from now.We may be surrounded by water, but fresh water is scarce so we must protect it with all we got.Water is a priceless and all forms of life depend on it. What are you doing in your part to preserve fresh water??Well these are tips you can do to preserve this priceless and valuable liqiud;
- Stop dumping waste in nearby streams
- Stop the indiscrimate cutting down of trees and plant more
- Use more of natural fertilizer
- Stop the spillage of oil in oceans and rivers
