What Do You Understand By Mycology?

In simple terms, I'll define mycology as the study that deals with fungi. If you are wondering what fungi is, it's a group of organisms which includes yeast, moulds, mushrooms, etc. Most of them are microscopic while others are visible to the eyes. Our environment is so broad that y'all discover that there are different aspects untapped yet. Mycology might look insignificant to some people but it is very important and I'll explain in the next heading.

Discuss On Why Mycology Is Important?

As I said earlier, the significance of mycology to human beings and the environment cannot be underestimated. In fact, I'll summarize this in three aspects which are the medical aspect, agricultural aspect and industrial aspect. In terms of the medical aspect, fungi is an important component in that field as different medicines cannot exist without it. Mycology made this knowledge known to man as he utilized it to the better health of man's life.

The study of mycology is also important in the agricultural aspect as we tend to understand why their growth is essential to the soil and the environment at large. In terms of industrial usage, fungi plays an important function in the manufacturing of our daily products. This means that members of the fungi kingdom are very essential in the manufacturing companies around us.

What Are The Real-life Applications Of Mycology

Mycology has practical and real life applications which I'll explain during the course of this heading.

• Food and Drinks Production: Let's look at the most common member of the fungi kingdom in our environment (mushrooms), mycology gave the go ahead to adopt it as food or not. Yeast is also important in producing bread and brewing beers.
• Medical field: Fungi is very essential in developing antibiotics such as penicillin which is used in surgeries. Currently, there is a hypothesis that the fungal compound is under development for cancer treatment. This shows the immense importance of fungi in the medical field.
• Nutrient Cycling: Fungi plays an important role in nutrient cycling as a decomposer. Their role is just to break down dead complex organic matter into simpler form so that the soil can assimilate. During this activity, organic debris in the environment is reduced and fertility in the soil is assured.
