What Is Heliculture?
Heliculture is the act of farming which involves tearing of snails. In simple terms, we can call it snail farming. This type of farming isn't very popular like poultry, cattle farming, etc. This is because there are certain locations that prohibit the usage of snails and rearing it isn't necessary. Places like Southern Nigeria openly accept the usage of snails, therefore the rearing process thrived well. One might ask how snails are being reared, I think the next paragraph will handle that.
What Are The Requirements For Snail Farming?
To start a snail farm, here are some requirements you have to put in place:
- Suitable location: This is the first step to consider before entering the business. Naturally, snails are animals that have little or no tolerance for noise. So, the location must be noise free. In terms of soil, it must be soft and moist with a high concentration of organic matter.
- Feeding: Snails are natural herbivores, so the farmer in question must make sure the feeding part doesn't move an inch. The farmer must ensure that foodstuffs like vegetables, fruits or leaves are easily available.
- Capital: This is an essential requirement because all others rely on this one. The size of the farm, the number of stock, and every other logistics is handled by this factor. So, the farmer must secure the Capital first before thinking of anything else.
Challenges Encountered In Snail Farming
Despite the simplicity of snail farming, there are some challenges that come with it. I'll share some challenges and solutions if possible.
- Disease or Parasite: Sometimes due to the dirty environment, the snail may suffer from fungal or bacterial infections. To prevent this, keep the pen clean always.
- Poor quality feed: If we take in only one type of foot repeatedly, we may suffer nutritional deficiency. Likewise snails can also suffer from deficiency if being fed with one type of food. To tackle this, make sure there is variety in the feed of snails. With that, the problem of nutritional deficiency will be solved.
- Unfavorable weather conditions: This challenge isn't man-made and can occur at any time. If it's not prepared for, the snail may tend to suffer. To solve this, make sure you provide shade and ensure a good drainage system.
