India vs England: Kohli fifth; Root with a double century ranked third

England captain Joe Root has overtaken Indian captain Virat Kohli in the latest ICC Test batting rankings. Root is third and Virat is fifth.

Jaspreet Bumrah and Ashwin are also at the top of the bowling list. Kohli, who scored 11 and 72 in the first Test against England, has 852 points and has slipped one place in the latest rankings released on Wednesday. Veteran spinner Ashwin and pacer Bumrah have moved up one place to seventh and eighth respectively.

Root, who helped his side to a memorable 227-run victory in Chennai, has kept England in the running for the ICC World Test Championship. His rating is 883 rating points. Root, who has scored 684 runs in three Tests (two against Sri Lanka) in Asia, is the best ranked player since September 2017.

Another England batsman, Dom Sibley, has also moved up to 35th position in the latest rankings. Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins tops the bowling chart. James Anderson has jumped from sixth to third. He is just four points behind his country's Stuart Broad.

Offspinner Jack Leach and Dominic Base are ranked 37th and 41st respectively. West Indies batsman Kyle Meyers was instrumental in Chittagong's 40-run and 210-run unbeaten run in the first Test against Bangladesh.

The bowlers benefited
For the first time since November 2017, Kohli is ahead of top-ranked Ken Williamson by 36 points and Steve Smith by just eight points. Rishabh Pant has become the first full-time wicketkeeper in the country to score 700 runs in the first innings and reach 700 rating points. He is also ranked 13th in the batting chart. Opener Shubhaman Gill has moved up seven places to 40th position while all-rounder Washington Sundar has moved up to 81st position. Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem has also gained two places. As a result, he has reached the 85th position of bowlers.
