Explain the Subject-Verb agreement in your words.
The subject and the verb to which the sentence refers must be in agreement both in person and in number.
Remember that verbs are words, or a group of words that indicate an action, an event; while the subject is the person, group of people or object.
As has been pointed out, concordance is the relationship that occurs in the different grammatical accidents, that is, person, gender and number, of the different elements of the sentence. Mostly, emphasis is placed between the subject and the verb of the sentence.
Concordance is also spoken of when in the same sentence there are several nouns and a single adjective, or a single noun and several adjectives; on this occasion certain rules must be taken into consideration.
It is essential to know the appropriate conjugation and the strict concordance that must exist; If it is modified, the meaning, coherence and sequence of the entire sentence will be altered, the central idea of it will be lost, in each and every one of the languages that we have.
Find and explore the 7 rules you have learned and provide 5 examples with each of them.
Rule Nº 1. When in a sentence there are subjects joined by “and” it is considered that they are in the plural, therefore the verb must be in the same way in the plural, that is, without adding the “s” at the end; for example:
1. María and José visit her aunt in the hospital.
2. His teacher and his students are in class.
3. Carlos and his friends play soccer.
4. Luis and Estela eat together.
5. The cat and the dog are domestic animals.
Rule Nº 2. In the sentences in which the subject is modified by the words "each" or "every", they are considered in the singular and, therefore, the verb must also be in the singular, therefore an "s "to the verb. For example;
1. All the girls dance in the square.
2. Each child receives a gift from her.
3. All the words are spelled correctly.
4. Each person has free choice.
5. Every citizen has rights and duties.
Rule Nº 3. In sentences in which plural subjects are united with "or", "neither" or "but", the verb must be consistent with the subject closest to it. For example;
1. Neither Maria nor Juliana go shopping.
2. Not Maria, but Juliana goes shopping.
3. Not Maria, but Juliana goes shopping.
4. Carlos doesn't, but Luis plays soccer.
5. Neither Juan nor Carlos eat bread.
Rule Nº 4. When indefinite pronouns are used in a sentence, it is considered as a singular subject, therefore a singular verb must be taken, that is, add "s" to the end of the verb. For example;
1. Everyone does their homework.
2. Anyone can go to school.
3. Everyone enjoyed the party.
4. Some people suffered from the disease.
5. Nobody agreed.
Rule Nº 5. If the adjective qualifies two or more coordinated nouns and goes after them, the adjective must be in the plural and in the masculine, if the nouns are of different gender. For example;
1. The stars, the bus and the pencil are yellow.
2. Carlos and Julián are great players.
3. The computer and the phone work perfectly.
4. The river and the sea are immense.
5. The moon and the sun shine in the sky.
Rule Nº 6. When an adjective qualifies several coordinated nouns and is placed before them, it usually agrees only with the closest one, both in gender and number. For example;
1. Juice and coffee are sweet.
2. My shoes and shirt are tight on me.
3. The plane and the train travel fast.
4. I like the beautiful cities, Caracas and Maracaibo.
5. Cars and motorcycles, they come fast.
Rule Nº 7. If there are two or more synonymous nouns joined by a disjunctive conjunction, the adjective must be in the singular. For example;
1. Glasses and cups are dirty.
2. The TV and radio are on.
3. Marcos and Juan are caring.
4. The knife and forks are sharp.
5. The flannel and the necklace are beautiful.
