Dog Care & Education - Stressful Situations and How to Help (Lesson 03) 15% of Income to Benefit Skillshare Community
Hello dear friends of the steam skillshare community, it is a pleasure to write again for you.
In the previous lesson, we were talking about the stress of our dogs, the symptoms to be able to identify it, and how to reduce it.
In today's reading we will continue talking about stress but this time with another approach, we will talk about the specific situations that can cause moments of stress and how to help solve them.
First, we must mention that there are two kinds of stress in dogs, specific stress, which is the one that occurs at a particular moment with momentary reactions and is much easier to handle. Then we have pathological stress, which is the stress that has been accumulating for a long time, due to routine or living conditions, it is much more difficult to handle, it requires more drastic changes in routines and generally the assistance of a professional.
This time we are going to focus on specific stress and for this, I am going to expose you to a series of situations that can trigger episodes of stress in our dogs: Violence, yelling and punishment, any violent reaction, excessive yelling, and physical punishment must be absolutely avoided, dogs are very sensitive to these events and the way to correct them is never violent, do not confuse having you as command and reaffirm authority by acting violently. In future lessons, I will give you techniques to reinforce the command voice and combine it with positive stimuli to redirect canine behavior. Practice training for a long time, dogs have a much more limited focus of attention than human beings, we used to prepare with long training sessions but for dogs, 20 minutes can be an eternity, to avoid increasing stress levels it is best to limit our training sessions to 5 minutes once or twice a day, we can do it every day but not for long periods. the best thing is that each exercise is repeated a maximum of five times and then move on to another and if the dog loses interest it is best to leave it rather than forcing it. Always remember to apply positive stimuli (his favorite snack, a caress, congratulate him when he does something well). Spending a long time can only increase stress levels, if the dog is locked up at home, the best thing is before going to work is to take him out for a short walk and when returning from work, it will not take us more than 15 minutes and our friend will appreciate it. The best way to help our dog is always recognizing changes in attitude, reactions, and personality in time, applying the necessary corrections, providing support, and, above all, having a lot of patience. In the most serious cases, it is always good to consult a specialist. Thank you all very much for reading. I will be attentive to any questions or comments, if you want to read the previous lesson, you can do it here. Greetings from Argentina! * 15% of the profits from this publication will benefit the Steem Skillshare Community
