what is a Computer Virus?

Computer Virus is a destructive program meant to cause Computer system malfunction. Computer viruses are like parasites, they cannot exist on their own, so they need a genuine program to attach themseIves to make for easy transfer from one place to the other as the most program is transferred. They also have the ability to multiply themselves to infect prospectives host programs. when the host software Is loaded into memory,the virus will also load itself into memory. If a Virus is resident in the Random Access Memory (RAM), then, it has the ability to transter itself to every program file that will be run during that session of operation.

Origin of Computer Viruses
The orign or development of computer virus can be discussed in three areas

(a)Software Piracy/Malfunction Programs: Software manufacturers had to control software piracy by incorporating in their software a method of checking illegal software
piracy/distribution. A software manufacturer for instance gave a customer freehand to make five copies of the purchased software. If the customer should breach the contract or software license agreement by making up to SIx Copies instead of the agreed five; the sixth copy of that sottware will become a computer virus. That is the sixth copy has the ability to attack and destroy computer system files or operating system files such that the computer cannot function once it is switched off and back on the next day.

Unauthorized Acquisition/Marketing Strategy: This situation occurs if a software manulacturer/programmer lor instance gives out his software for advertisement or testing purposes: giving a later date of purchase or registration. lf at the stipulated time the user refuses to pay or register the Sottware but still makes use of it, the software can turn to a coputer virus and cause destruction to the computer system or data stored, depending on how the program was designed to behave in such circumstance

Deliberate Manufacture: There are some groups of programmers that make a living from development of Computer virus programs.Some are paid to infect a network System in order to steal information or break mto cert rcstricted arcas that are computer security controlled.Any one copying or downloading such programs from the web will automaticaly downiord the virus also unknowingly.there are also virus software witers that créate jobs for Antivirus software manufacturers. After developing a vinus program, the necessary information that are looked for by the anti-virus software
manufscturers are sent to them for a fee

External Storage device: Extemal storage devices are used for preservation or data transfer from one location to the other. lf information is transfered from a system infected with computer vrus, the virus will write itself to the external storage device (e.g.flash drive) to the compyter present.

(ii) Internet: The Internet Is a global network that achicves data
communication round the world. lt is the interlinking of computer or
networks to achieve resource sharing. Various pages are stored in the
Internet for remole access by people round the word. Computer virus
program stored in the web site can easily write itselt to the destination
System attempting to download the host sottware.

(iii)Computer Link or Network: Linking of two or more Computer to
communicate and share resources will lead to transfer of virus from one
infected system to a clean system. The Virus being resident in memory
(RAM) Can easily write itselt to the other computer withoutut being noticed.

there are several warning signs associated with viruses. We should
suspect the presence of a virus if we see files that inerease in size randomly.
the appearance of unknown files, and lost files,the inability to save files,computer indication of corrupted files,sudden lack of hard drive space,the inability to access programs etc. There are three basic steps to protection against virus these are

Prevention: You must install virus protection software in order to detect, eradicate, and report viruses.There are several programs out on the market, and all are very reasonable in price. It is much cheaper to buy virus prevention soltware than it is to fix a computer once it is infected. of courseurse you also need to update your virus definitions frequently, new viruses are created every day, and it is up to you to make sure that your software is up to date by checking
with your antivirus software website.examples of antivirus software available are: Norton,McAfee, F-prot etc

Detection
installing the program is not enough to prevent viruses. it is up to you to make sure the program is run on a regular basis twice weekly is enough

Eradication:When a warning is given about a virus being detected on your computer, you must act quickly quarantine the virus, delete it and repair the compromised program, most Virus protection programs do this tor you.
