define phrase and give five examples

A phrase is a group of two or more words that express a single idea but do not form a complete sentence.
In syntax and grammar, a phrase is a group of words which act together as a grammatical unit.

examples of phrase

  • He was waiting for the rain to stop.
  • She was upset when it didn't boil.
  • You have been sleeping for a long time.
  • You might enjoy a massage.
  • He was eager to eat dinner.

noun phrase

adjective/adjectival phrase

An adjective phrase is a group of words that describe a noun or pronoun in a sentence

examples

  • She speaks in a very slow
  • We never cycle inheavy.
  • I'd love a cup of hot

adverb/adverbial phrase

more words that function as an adverb in a sentence. Just as an adverb can modify a verb.

example

  • I came here yesterday.
  • Once upon a time, the lady lived here.

verb/verbal phrase

A verb phrase is a syntactic unit consisting of an auxiliary (helping) verb preceding the main verb.

examples

  • She was walking quickly to the mall.
  • He should wait before going swimming.

infinitives phrase

An infinitive phrase is a group of words consisting of an infinitive, a modifier or the use of pronouns, direct objects, indirect objects or complements of action or state expressed in the infinitive.

examples

  • to read
  • To jump
    NOTE:Remember that although infinitives are verbs, they do not function as verbs, instead they are used as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs.

prepositional phrase

gerund phrase

A gerund phrase is a phrase consisting of a gerund and any modifiers or objects associated with it.

particible phrase

A participle phrase is a group of words containing a participle, modifier, and pronoun or noun phrases.

examples

  • Sitting in the rocking chair
  • he old woman yelled at the kids in her yard.
