거미줄은 생각보다 더 단단하다, 머리카락 굵기의 30분의 1로 얇은 거미줄 한가닥이 곤충들의 무게를 견뎌낸다. 거미줄은 보통 최대 30m까지도 늘어난다고 한다. 거미가 흥미로운 점은 거미집을 짓는데 있어서 필요한 재료는 다 거미 몸속안에 이미 있다는 것이다. 예를들어, 보통 새의 경우 둥지를 짓기 위해 주변의 잔가지, 풀, 잎 등이 필요하지만, 거미는 그렇지 않다. 거미집을 짓기 위한 거미줄의 재료. 즉, 충분히 많은 양의 단백질을 배속 안에 가지고 있다.

Cobwebs are harder than expected, with a single strand of thin cobweb withstands the weight of insects at a half the thickness of a hair. It is said that spider webs usually stretch up to 30m. 방적돌기(spinneret, auf Deutsch Spinndrüse) 라는 기관에서 거미실이 나오는데, 보통 6가닥, 즉 3쌍이 있으며, 몇몇 종은 1쌍이나 2쌍만 가지고 있다. 이 방적돌기 안에 Seidenlösung(한글명칭을 모르겠음)라는 물질이 저장되는데, 이것이 수많은 작은 관들을 통해서 하얀 액체로 흘려 보낸다, 이 액체들이 한곳으로 집합하여 집합체를 형성하고, 끝에는 방적돌기 밖으로 나가는데, 나가기 바로 직전에 액체들이 거미실로 변환되어 단단해진다. 이것이 거미줄이고, 이 거미줄로 거미집이 형성된다. 거미실은 아주 여러개의 유사한 단백질로 상호 연결되어 있으며, 이것들이 체인이나 매듭처럼 끈끈하게 묶여있다. 이 단백질체인 외의 나머지 공간의 물질들은 이 단백질에 높은 탄력을 제공하는 역할을 수행한다. 거미줄은 강철보다 단단하다고 한다. 아마 이말은 거미줄이 일반 강철조각의 크기와 부피를 가진 상황일 때를 얘기하는 듯하다.
