Did you know that Father’s Day was actually created by a woman? Yep, a woman!Julia Ward Howe came up with the idea of a special day to honor fathers in the 1870s, during the women’s suffrage movement.
Howe was the leader of the pacifist movement during the Civil War period, and used her position to influence President Lincoln in the creation of the holiday.
Although Howe had no children herself, she came up with the idea of a “Peace Sunday” to honor fathers. She hoped that if people observed this day their thoughts would lead them to world peace. Her idea went nowhere, but it did inspire a father’s day celebration in Grafton, West Virginia in 1910.
In 1914, Sonora Smart Dodd introduced the idea of Fathers Day at a Mother’s Day gathering in Spokane, Washington.

Father’s day began to honor the father figure in every home. What started as a religious holiday, the Catholic Church created the first “father’s day” to celebrate the role of the father. This tradition was adopted in the early 1900’s by other countries and by the 1950’s, President Eisenhower declared “father’s day” an official national holiday in the U.S.
The history of fathers day:
