The Sand Creek Massacre (also called the Chivington Massacre or Battle of Sand Creek) occurred on November 29, 1864, as part of the larger events of the Colorado War and the Indian Wars in the United States of America.

An encampment of some 600 Native American members of the southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, located in a bend in the Big Sandy Creek River (now in Kiowa County in the eastern state of Colorado), was attacked by 700 state militia soldiers commanded by the Colonel John Chivington, despite the various peace treaties signed by local tribal chiefs with the US government. Given the low number of warriors armed and able to defend themselves present in the camp, the attack of the soldiers resulted in an indiscriminate massacre of women and children, with an estimated number of deaths among the natives between 125 and 175 victims (in addition to another 24 dead and 52 injured among the same military attackers). As reported by many eyewitnesses, the bodies of the killed natives were scaled and in many cases repeatedly mutilated by the soldiers.

Il massacro di Sand Creek (chiamato anche massacro di Chivington o battaglia di Sand Creek) si verificò il 29 novembre 1864, nell'ambito dei più vasti eventi della guerra del Colorado e delle guerre indiane negli Stati Uniti d'America.

Un accampamento di circa 600 nativi americani membri delle tribù Cheyenne meridionali e Arapaho, situato in un'ansa del fiume Big Sandy Creek (oggi nella Contea di Kiowa nella parte orientale dello Stato del Colorado), fu attaccato da 700 soldati della milizia statale comandati dal colonnello John Chivington, a dispetto dei vari trattati di pace firmati dai capi tribù locali con il governo statunitense. Visto lo scarso numero di guerrieri armati e capaci di difendersi presenti nel campo, l'attacco dei soldati si tradusse in un massacro indiscriminato di donne e bambini, con un numero di morti tra i nativi stimato tra le 125 e le 175 vittime (oltre ad altri 24 morti e 52 feriti tra gli stessi militari attaccanti). Come riferito da molti testimoni oculari, i corpi dei nativi uccisi furono scalpati e in molti casi ripetutamente mutilati da parte dei soldati.
