In Africa, burial ceremony is considered one of the best ways to explain if the dead would join his ancestors or not. Without a benefiting burial ceremony, the Igbos believe that the gods won't receive the dead but would always ask him/her to demand for full rites. Because of this, the soul of the dead would hover around and sending messages through means for the living to understand the need to fulfill every necessary rites. And when such is done, the soul of the dead would stop appearing and things would be well again with the members of the family.
The living who didn't perform burial rites of their own person, won't take part in the eating of food associated with burial if eaten, it's believed that the spirit of the dead would hunt in full wrought.
