Virtue Versus Virtue Signaling

in DTube6 years ago (edited)

Some times the ideas for my vlogs come at me easier than other times. Today, it was pretty easy. I have been in near constant communication with active Steem users, and it all has a theme. They are confiding in me what they really think about Steem, Tron, and Hive. Unfortunately, they don't feel like they can actually say them out to the public.

I'm not talking about average users. I am talking about witnesses and large community leaders. I am glad that they feel comfortable telling me their thoughts, but it is a shame that they are not comfortable enough to share it with "the community".

Last week I was told to stay in my lane. That is what I am doing. I'm talking about philosophy and human behavior. The Ideas of Virtue versus Virtue Signalling are very clear.

vir·tue
/ˈvərCHo͞o/
Learn to pronounce
noun

behavior showing high moral standards.

mor·al
/ˈmôrəl/
Learn to pronounce
adjective

concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human character.

vir·tue sig·nal·ing
noun
the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue.

I believe what we are seeing in the world today with Covid 19 and on the blockchain is Virtue Signalling. The common practice of publicly expressing opinions and sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character.

On the other side of this we could probably have something called virtue shaming. So If someone has their own idea of what good and bad are, then they establish their own virtue. If their virtue does not line up with someone else's, then there could be the potential of shaming the person publicly because they don't agree, and essentially calling their virtue the only correct reality.

It is a dangerous slippery slope when this happens. Sure people will always have the freedom to say whatever they want, but if that was the case...why are they afraid to. I would always be cautious of someone presenting their ideas as something that you should follow. I believe in keeping everything voluntary and just owning an option. People should have the right to choose what they want to do or say.

On that note, I am going to wrap this up. Thanks to everyone for continuing to support my adventure.

Be well

I hope I was vague enough that no one feels like I am personally attacking anyone. It is just an idea about human behavior that has been observed.
