Why I Think The Communties Feature On Steem And Hive Is A Bummer

in DTube6 years ago (edited)

As a daily user of several blogging platforms, today I wanted to drop some thoughts about my experience and opinion about some of the features. What I am focusing on is the communities feature of Steem Blockchain and Hive Blockchain.

I have been actively vlogging and blogging on several social media platforms since 2016, and started into the crypto space in 2017. My first experience was amazing. There was so much to learning, and so much to take it, it was pretty overwhelming.

With time I because fluent on the Steem Blockchain. I was able to navigate, correctly tag, and actually "work" the social network. That all changed when the communities feature was rolled out. This isn't a gripe session, but it is a post that I hope someone that is able to make changes can see.

For years Steemit Inc. has talked about being Reddit like. With reddits and sub reddits, you can really see the target market that they were after. I'm not too familiar with reddit, but I didn't think that it was a blogging site as much as it is a topic site.

With that being said, the Steem Blockchain was modeled after the idea of Reddit, but it gave life to Dapp after Dapp that is blog based and essentially laid out completely different than Reddit. I assume that the ones making the changes believe that this is exactly what it should look and function like, but I am not at the top...I am a user.

In my experience with the Steem blockchain I have loved the explore option. I really liked being able to find content that was exactly what I was looking for, and not having to fish through communities to find it. In my mind, communities didn't replace the explore option. As a curator, I also found that it was more difficult to find the content. Not difficult as in hard, but difficult as in it took more steps to work through.

I know that this might sound like some old guy rant from someone that just can't keep up with the times, but I hope it could be seen differently. Hopefully, it would be see as a post that is thoughtfully made about a platform that he really loves...because that is what it is. I know that there are many front ends on the blockchains, but until innerblocks.com launches, I like to use the "mother ships". I always use Steemit.com, and I have been using Hive.blog.

I think it would be real nice if we could see something more about the vision of the communities. It feels like both Steem and Hive have just given us the communities, but didn't really give us a full instruction manual. Like, if they were building it to become this grand vision...just tell us how.

I love all of the growth and change around the blockchains, and I look forward to seeing what this can become. I would love to hear your thoughts on the communities feature, and what is something that you wish they would change?

Be well
