CORONA TRANSIT GUATEMALA

Traveling from town to town at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala used to be easy. After going through the process of getting all the paperwork needed to move from town to town after the country went into Corona Lockdown... this is what it looks like.
Each town has there own ‘onda’ ...’vibe’.
There is a big fear that the Corona virus is being carried by foreigners. So many towns are afraid or more hesitant of gringos. Yesterday i went to a town called Santa Clara to get some bamboo... I was refused entry because they are allowing no foreigners in. (Not shown in this video)
The truth is that of the 644 cases in the country... only 2 have been foreigners. Almost all cases in Guatemala can be traced to a man who went to a wedding in Spain and 2 other Guatemalans that went to a sporting event in Spain. So while it obviously originated from foreigners it was actually brought in by traveling Guatemalans.
It’s all good. I understand the fears. And while a simple trip between towns has a now turned into a process... i also accept this and think its a good thing. We still have no registered cases here at the lake. As there are only 4 entry points into the Lake Atitlan Basin.... i actually think these strict transit checks are helping to keep the virus out so far.
Lots of people have lots of theories of what is right and wrong. As a guest living in Guatemala for the last 10 years it doesnt seem my place to judge. I dont really dive into all of it. I simply appreciate that we are currently safe here from the virus and do not mind a slightly delayed trip that jumps through some paperwork hoops.
