Why Decentralized Video Platforms Haven't Taken Over (DTube, 3Speak, DLive, Odysee, Appics, BitTube)

With all the cancel culture going on with mainstream social media people always call out that we need these decentralized alternatives that can't be shut down. As much traction as they make they never quite get to the point of mass adoption for various reasons. Some of the momentum that has been gained by some of them seems to quickly evaporate from in fighting or forking away to other chains which can lose part of the community. Also it is tough to get on exchanges and achieve adequate liquidity to attract bigger investors. Once projects start getting delisted or don't have enough liquidity to get in and out it becomes very risky for people to bring their money to the platforms. On top of that most of the projects haven't utilized Ad revenue properly to make the projects perpetuate themselves through the crypto bear markets. Suddenly it is based on speculation of the underlying currency which gets pulled down with everything during the bear market. It crushes these platforms instead of allowing them to be more of an evergreen situation. Also the hosting of video content is so expensive that it makes it hard to afford the hosting as a platform becomes more successful.

Here's my thoughts, historically the content on these platforms has been not the best, I'd come on to play the game but didn't necessarily enjoy consuming the content. I think part of that is the algorithm, nobody can match Youtube in terms of delivering relevant content you want to see. I do think the quality and type of content is improving seeing platforms like Rumble and others actually get some decent names and a wider variety of content than just crypto content. I do think part of it is the learning curve ie these sites aren't as friendly as Youtube. Lastly there's just too much stuff to manage in regards to regular social media sites plus then managing a variety of crypto wallets and then accounts on all these platforms, I'd love it if someone could create one platform that would allow you to upload content or even a youtube link and then shoot it over to all the platforms and also allow you to respond to comments across all these platforms. I'll have to watch your video closer I was at the gym while listening and half watching it but I believe you did mention or show a way to deliver content from youtube across numerous other crypto related video sites.

A lot of these platforms certainly get confusing for people to use and the nature of the fact that they didn't have these additional revenue streams from Ads to actually make the ecosystem more sustainable is an issue. To some respect there has to be enough traffic to a site to make it worth having the ads but Steemit achieved that in the 2017 / 2018 timeframe and it had the ability to truly become a more sustainable ecosystem. I really wish the community could have stayed in one place and I think it really would have done a lot better overall.
